The Phillies are off today (Thurs July 24) as the club heads out on a six-game road trip to end the month. They play at Yankee Stadium for three this weekend and then have three at Rate Field with the Chisox to close out July. It all leads right up to the MLB trade deadline.
Happy 53rd birthday to Phillies 2004 corner infield reserve Shawn Wooten (pic). At age 31 he appeared in 33 games that season. He won a World Series ring with the Angels in 2002 during four seasons with them, finished his big league career in 2005 with Boston.
OTD 1995: Phillies deal 1993 NL pennant-winning third baseman Dave Hollins to Boston for outfielder Mark Whiten. The 29-year-old Hollins had been with the club since 1990 and started at the hot corner most of the prior four years.
OTD 2011: Phillies executive Pat Gillick, who had put the finishing touches on the club's 2008 World Series champs in his role as GM, is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Gillick was GM of Toronto's 1992-93 champs and later built winners in both Baltimore and Seattle.
OTD 2003: Bobby Abreu ties the Phillies franchise record with five RBIs in one inning. The 29-year-old right fielder blasted a grand slam and later brought home a run with a sac fly as part of a nine-run 6th inning leading to a 14-6 win at Wrigley Field.
