The idea that God exists is incredible, but so is the idea that God does not exist, and that this vast reality just happens to be, and happens to be such as to permit us to be here pondering our existence. There's no escaping believing things that seem incredible -- absurd, even.
“A Lion of the Pulpit, Now in Christ’s Presence: The Relentless Expository Passion of John F. MacArthur, Jr., 1939-2025. This essay honors John MacArthur as a great gift to Christ’s church — and to me. To God be the glory. wng.org/opinions/a-lio…
another piece of advice: when leaving a tradition and entering a new one, it is good to be quiet for some time about the errors of your past trad and the glories of the one you have very recently entered this protects against cage-stage folly and ingratitude
Everyone: “How can @JoelBeeke write so many books, be a pastor, and run a seminary?” Joel Beeke:
When a church does not have a robust liturgy, those who suffer the most are the children. They conclude that church is a performance on stage they watch, not a gospel they *participate* in. It's a matter of time before they grow up disenchanted with Christianity.
"The doctrine of the infinity of God [is] the foundation of Calvinism." - Auguste Lecerfe, quoted by @scottrswain & Allen, Reformed Theology
Parenthood gives you a stake in your local surroundings that's load-bearing for maintaining civilization. I don't think it's a coincidence that SF became San Fransicko after decades of VC culture propagandized the family-later-but-grind-first ethos for startups.
“All metaphysics ends in ethics.”
Each worldview that wrestles with an earnest and honest investigation ends with this practical demand: ‘If these things are true, direct your life toward them.’ All metaphysics ends in ethics.’
"Burke saw society as an association of the dead, the living, and the unborn. Its binding principle is not contract, but something more akin to love."
"The error of reducing political order to the operations of the market parallels the error of revolutionary socialism, in reducing politics to a plan. In his Reflections on the French Revolution, Burke argued against the geometrical politics, as he called it, of the French…
by father and mother, in the fifth commandment, are meant, not only natural parents, but all superiors in age and gifts; and especially such as, by God’s ordinance, are over us in place of authority, whether in family, church, or commonwealth
Two interesting facts here about the V2 bombers: • The V stands for Vergeltung (“retribution”), which is pretty revealing • More people were killed making them than were killed by them I’m guessing those two facts are connected.
These ethical guidelines work for me: So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, a desolation until this day. He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. — Joshua 8:28-29a
What ethical guidelines should pastors follow when using AI to develop sermons?
#Pray for two new @uk_ipc church plants: Will Allan and his family, moving from Trinity Church Aberdeen to Salford to start Hope Church Salford this autumn, and Andy Ritson and his family, moving from Grace Church Larbert to Carlisle to start Eden Church Carlisle this autumn.…
“… when we see what we want to believe online, we don’t make an active effort to make sure we are not misled; that we prefer to disseminate the juicy to the true; that we would always prefer to have confirmation for what we already think;..“ Anton Barba-Kay
"In the end, having children is not merely an act of dogged obedience, or even simply an act of faith. It’s an act of transcendence... into places where I cannot be and a future too distant for me to reach." - @RevKevDeYoung clearlyreformed.org/the-case-for-k…
Loving God above all things is in your best interest. But your best interest is not the best reason for loving God above all things.
“We introduce the Holy Spirit too late in the story, we think he starts at Pentecost… by then he’s had a long and fruitful career. He appears in the second verse of the Bible.” - @MichaelHorton_ @solamediaorg @CredoMagazine youtube.com/watch?v=J1gKNM…
