Wendy Cope, born on this day, 21st July 1945 - Her poetry is generally regarded as humorous and light-hearted. A lover of life and living it fully. I love this form, the Villanalle, and sometimes use this poem of hers in workshops as a fine example of the form. Difficult form???

Two poems from the wonderful Elizabeth Jennings - born on this day, 18th July 1926 (died 26th Oct. 2001). I've recently gone back to reading her work and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Her poems and her faith were cornerstones in her life. @poetryireland @PoetrySociety


On this day 98 years ago Countess Markievicz died. The poor of Dublin honoured her kindness to them - 300,000 attended her funeral procession from the Pillar Room at the Rotunda to the Republican Plot at Glasnevin. We honour her.
Born the son of a poor labourer in Peterborough on this day, JOHN CLARE - forsaken by family and friends, he died in a lunatic asylum, having spent the last 22 years of his life there. He famously wrote; "If life had a second edition, how I would correct the proofs." Wise words!
