In July of 1978, there was a 5-alarm fire at an apartment building next to Old North Church. Firefighters acted quickly to protect the church, and fortunately, our historic landmark was spared.

Today in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was publicly read for the first time from the balcony of Boston’s Old State House. Abigail Adams recalled the celebration: "bells rang, the privateers fired...the cannon were discharged...and every face appeared joyful."

Did you know that Ben Franklin once lived in Boston’s North End? As a boy, he resided at the corner of Union and Hanover Streets. Later in life, he owned a house on Unity Street where his sisters lived. The house stood steps away from Old North Church, but was sadly torn down.

Tonight! Join us on Zoom for a talk with Dr. Alexandria Russell about the legacy of Phillis Wheatley. More than a century after her death, Black women in the Jim Crow era mobilized to tell Wheatley's story through public memorials and public history. eventbrite.com/e/the-legacy-o…

Phillis Wheatley, the first African American to publish a book of poetry, tragically died in 1784 in obscurity. More than a century later, Wheatley’s legacy was kept alive by Black women. Join us for an online talk on July 16 for the remarkable story: eventbrite.com/e/the-legacy-o…

A highlight of our July 4th celebration was this interactive reading of the Declaration of Independence from Rev. Peter Preble. Enjoy this short clip from the reading — and feel free to "boo" and "huzzah" from home!
On July 4th, we hosted the delightful musical duo known as Tripp and Toddy. Dressed in 18th-century clothing, they shared songs, jokes, and riddles from the 1700s. A highlight of their performance was a "duel to the death." Enjoy this clip from their epic swordfight!

Today in 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a motion for independence from Great Britain. In a letter to his wife Abigail, John Adams predicted that July 2nd — not July 4th — would be the day that Americans would remember and celebrate for years to come!

Can you spot Old North Church in this sculpture of North End buildings? Our steeple is shiny because people can't resist touching it!

Join us on July 4th for a fun Independence Day Celebration! We’ll have dramatic readings of the Declaration of Independence, live music from an 18th-century costumed duo who will "duel to the death," and tours of our historic crypt and bell chamber. oldnorth.com/events/
