Never understood having to write an essay to apply to uni. Or doing extra-curricular stuff. Or getting in because you're good at sports. All of it really weird (not to mention having to pay). Why not just be sorted on your grades, and then apply to wherever you want to go?
Whenever I see students with good grades but lots of college rejections, my first thought is a bad personal essay. As predicted, this guy's essay was kind of a disaster. Since I did get into Harvard, I'll give my two cents on the essay:
Animal research Tomorrow is deeply concerned about recent legislative efforts of the US Congress to ban animal research in all institutions receiving federal funding. These developments raise significant anxieties in the scientific community. Read more animalresearchtomorrow.org/en/projects/so…

"Do dogs love us?" is an interesting scientific question, but only to be answered after we know for sure what "love" is (to the point of not needing scare quotes) as well as after establishing whether animals love (e.g. their pups?) at all, whatever that means.
A few days away from the release of "OUT OF YOUR MIND: The biggest mysteries of the human brain." A mashup of prose and comics, Kirkus Reviews says it's "An entertaining examination of fundamental questions about what makes us human." Order here: amazon.com/Out-Your-Mind-…

The megajournal @SciReports, published by @SpringerNature, has been criticised for publishing fraudulent research in an open letter signed by well-known experts in research fraud: @MicrobiomDigest, @deevybee and @gcabanac. chemistryworld.com/news/open-lett…
On silver linings. After failing to go to Brazil, @DoKarolis managed to move my talk to the next day in online format. And though it was 8.00 AM after a congress party the previous evening, we got a full house. And doubled the registrations for my (now online) workshop tomorrow!

Never flying again. Just kidding, next week I'll be in Paris!
It led to cancelling my trip to São Paulo (Madrid connection). I had the most frightening flight ever. Two failed landing attempts (then diverted to Alicante), shaking and dips mid-air all the way. Blue lightning sparks hitting the wings. Yet those down below had it much worse.
