A transcript of the Austro-Hungarian Naval Attaché in Berlin’s report on the Battle of Jutland, dated 17 June 1916. Insights, opinions and contradictions galore! #history dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…

The issues with The Dreadnought Project site have hopefully been resolved now. Thank you for your patience during this difficult time!

You may have noticed issues with the website lately. This is due to malicious bot traffic. Using http:// instead of https:// in front of every link is currently working. dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…

A newly-transcribed set of instructions, this time for the Surveyor of the Navy, renamed Controller of the Navy in 1860. Until ca. 1855 he was based at Somerset House. #history dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…

We have returned, albeit with a slightly different look!

The Naval Defence Act, 1889, gave effect to the Two Power Standard and launched 70 ships, but what was the actual text of it? You can read it at @NavyHistorian: dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/… #history
Utterly devastating news to wake up to. Historian @ProfCMBell passed away on 15 May aged 57. I’m sorry I never got to actually meet him after years of emails. He was always exceedingly helpful. harboursidecremation.ca/m/obituaries/C…
Another Austro-Hungarian Navy perspective on the Germans at Jutland. This report was written by a gunnery engineer officer in August 1916 and covers damage to German warships, new vessels, matériel, and other aspects of the German Navy. #history dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…

Jellicoe refers to the gale on p. 133 of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘵. Someone in the battleship 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 wrote: “Hardly a dry spot in the ship between decks due to leaks in edges of armour plates etc. Four feet of water in one lieutenants cabin by after 6" gun.” !!
One thing I learned from my trip to the National Maritime Museum today is that after a gale on the night of 27/28 September 1914 the Grand Fleet required 𝟯𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 yards (27,432 metres, 17 miles) of wire to repair the damage to wireless aerials in the Battle Fleet. #history
We’ve updated our page on the journal 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 so that it now lists every article in it from 1977 to 2023. Roll on 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 2024. #history dreadnoughtproject.org/periodicals/wa…

The Dreadnought Project has a list of all the Naval Staff Monographs prepared by the Royal Navy after the First World War, which have been published online by the Royal Australian Navy. These constitute an official history of the war. #history dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…

An account of the German battle cruiser 𝘚𝘦𝘺𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘻 at the Battle of Jutland (𝘚𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘬𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵), and the fight to save her piano. #history dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…

I'm a McKenna fan but this is still a very good election poster.
Today is the 112th anniversary of the notorious 114th Meeting of the Committee of Imperial Defence, which took place at 2 Whitehall Gardens. The minutes are online at @NavyHistorian. #history dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…
Just created a bare article at @NavyHistorian on Sir Archibald Hurd, a prolific writer on naval affairs who rather surprisingly has no Wikipedia article and no @ODNB entry. dreadnoughtproject.org/tfs/index.php/…
Rating from H.M.S. Excellent demonstrating field gun drill in 1900 - 122 years ago! #history
