Nature Plants
@NaturePlants
Nature Plants is an online-only, monthly journal publishing the best research on plants. Now most of the action is on Bluesky @natplants.nature.com.
The July issue is now fully online: nature.com/nplants/volume… On the cover: in hops, sex is determined by an X–A balance system in which plants with a high ratio of X sex chromosomes to autosomes become female and those with a lower ratio default to becoming male.

July issue: Flavonoids, pest migration, US-Mexico import tariffs, food ingredient safety, Myanmar's poultry-fish sector, nitrogen benchmarking for cropping systems… and more! nature.com/natfood/volume…
New Article: "When and where soil dryness matters to ecosystem photosynthesis" rdcu.be/evfGV A causality-guided explainable AI framework shows soil moisture dominates vapour pressure deficit in shaping global photosynthesis during water-limited conditions.

New OA Article: "A root-based N-hydroxypipecolic acid standby circuit to direct immunity and growth of Arabidopsis shoots" rdcu.be/expzb Root microorganisms can trigger the release of immune-stimulating N-hydroxypipecolic acid from Arabidopsis roots.

New Editorial: "The human factor" rdcu.be/exe7t From this month, we will be publishing pieces specifically focused on the personal side of research. And the first is: Q&A with Aster Gebrekirstos: "Creating resilience through agroforestry" rdcu.be/exl7A

News & Views: "Beyond the identification of Mendel’s genes" rdcu.be/ew9sb Recent ID of the molecular basis of Mendel’s remaining three traits and demonstration that the genes concerned are major contributors to phenotypic variation in pea. See rdcu.be/ew9tb

New Article: "Trans-organ analysis of co-expression networks reveals a mobile long-distance regulator that balances shoot & root development in Arabidopsis" rdcu.be/ew9oS With N&V: "A mobile TF coordinates systemic responses to N deficiency" rdcu.be/ew9qe

Our editors write: - Climate change effects: Warming risks Tibetan meadow collapse rdcu.be/ew9mm - Chloroplast division: ARC3 required for constriction rdcu.be/ew9mX - Kleptoplasty: Edible second-hand solar panels rdcu.be/ew9ne

Our third paper of the year is a wonderful collaboration with my former PI, Yuree, and her amazing team. We found a remarkable wound-healing mechanism in mature Arabidopsis leaves where mesophyll cells adopt an epidermal identity to rebuild a multi-layered protective barrier.
New Article: "Wounding induces multilayered barrier formation in mature leaves via phytohormone signalling and ATML1-mediated epidermal specification" rdcu.be/eweVr With News & Views: "Heal the wound to make a better seal" rdcu.be/eweVU
Through its L-shaped structure, AVRcap1b sterically blocks the SlNRC3 resistosome by forming contacts with three protomers (half the hexameric resistosome)! 5/10

New Article: "Bromodomain-containing proteins interact with a non-canonical RNA polymerase II kinase to maintain gene expression upon heat stress" rdcu.be/evxQI CDKL9 and acetylated-histone-binding proteins GTE2 and GTE7 are important for plant heat tolerance.

New OA Letter: "Guard cells on the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces use different compositions of potassium ion channels to drive light-induced stomatal opening" rdcu.be/evxO3 scRNA-Seq, OnGuard model, genetic modification show distinct AKT1/KAT1 on both sides.

New OA Article: "Water availability positions auxin response maxima to determine plant regeneration fates" rdcu.be/evfFF High water availability induces root regeneration whereas low water availability triggers callus formation via stress hormones...
