Shopping was a different experience during World War One! This is a page from Edinburgh woman Harriet Mackay’s National Ration Book, issued 14 July 1918. It shows Harriet went to shops across the city to purchase sugar, meat, butter, bacon and other items.

Signatures of Robert Burns in the excise salary book for Dumfries, showing the poet’s declining health. Burns, an exciseman, was signing to confirm he had received his wages. The final signature is from one week before he died on 21 July 1796.

The first volume of the Register of Sasines, 1617 - the world's oldest national public land register. The word “sasine” comes from the old ceremony of receiving sasine, when a new owner was given a symbolic object such as earth or stone, in front of witnesses.

A warrant of Edward I with the Seal of the Guardians of Scotland attached, 1292. The warrant authorises payments for Alan de Dunfres, Chancellor of Scotland. Wax seals were used as proof of the sender’s identity, and this one depicts the crucifixion of St Andrew.
