New Short Film Release | Shark Awareness Day In celebration of #SharkAwarenessDay, we’re excited to share a powerful new short film by Ocean Census, filmed at NRF-SAIAB and in Tanzania. Watch the full film on Ocean Census' YouTube channel: youtube.com/watch?v=xYuTXE…
LostSharks | Day 3 Cowley’s Torpedo Ray (Tetronarce cowleyi) was once misidentified — until Dr. Dave Ebert recognized it as a new species during his Ph.D. Named in 2015 after fellow ichthyologist Paul Cowley Ocean Census film launches Today (14 July) midday!

We’ve joined the global Plastic Free July movement! 📷 Let’s reduce, reuse, and rethink our plastic use — small changes lead to a big environmental impact. #PlasticFreeJulySAIAB #ReduceReuseRefuse
#LostSharks | Day 2 The Paddlenose Spookfish (Rhinochimaera africana) was the first species Dr. Dave Ebert ever described — discovered in 1986 off Doring Bay, SA, and named in 1990. It had been misidentified as a more common species until studied closely.

LostSharks | Day 1 In the lead-up to a short film by Ocean Census (out 14 July for #SharkAwarenessDay), we’re spotlighting sharks discovered by Dr. Dave Ebert Meet the Southern Frilled Shark, the 2nd known species in its family, named in 2009 from a specimen found off Namibia

Last night at the #SASAqS2025 gala dinner, two outstanding students were awarded copies of Freshwater Fishes of Southern Africa by Prof Paul Skelton. NRF-SAIAB proudly donated the books in support of student excellence in aquatic science. #SASAqS2025 #AquaticScienceandPractice

That’s a wrap from #SASAqS2025! NRF-SAIAB proudly contributed to a total of 9 sessions, countless conversations, and new ideas. Grateful for the science community pushing for sustainable aquatic futures. Until next year! #sasaqs #AquaticScienceandPractice #AquaticScience

What excites our researchers & students about being part of #SASAqS2025? From discovery to collaboration — hear what drives their passion for aquatic science! #SASAqS2025 #AquaticScienceandPractice #AquaticScience
Day 3 is underway at #SASAqS2025! Today, our team presented work on feeding ecology and functional morphology, non-native species and biodiversity management, and sustainable aquatic resource use through ecological engineering #sasaqs #AquaticScienceandPractice #AquaticScience
