@NESSCresearch
NESSC brings scientists from different areas of expertise together to gain a better understanding of climate change and to improve climate predictions.
After 10 years of ambitious climate research, the Netherlands Earth System Science Centre (NESSC) has now closed. Our legacy: over 700 peer-reviewed articles, the educational programme @TPAhead, a network of over 100 scientists! Thank you for following! buff.ly/4h5j37o
There’s no better way to start the Christmas season by ending a decades long squabble between scientists on the extinction of dinosaurs! A terrific NESSC article by @palaeoconnor and @FP_GDGT was just published in Science Advances! Read here for more: buff.ly/49IlB8K
A new NESSC article is out - and it's the first paper of @anne_kruijt's PhD research - congratulations! 🎉 Together with @AppySluijs and Jack Middelburg, Anne looked at the limitations of coral growth in warmer climates times. Have a look here: buff.ly/3ZpXXdn
The next PhD defence of NESSC research is already close! Next week Thomas Hessilt (@VU_Science) will defend his PhD thesis on Monday November 18th! The defence starts at 11:45. Read here on his research on the drivers of fires in the boreal forests: buff.ly/4fGCzpB
NESSC is happy to announce the PhD defence of Laura Pacho Sampedro (NIOZ / Utrecht University) on November 6th! And yes, that’s tomorrow! The defence starts at 14:15 and can also be followed via livesteam! Read here for a summary of her research: buff.ly/3NRPPfp
A new NESSC paper has appeared! Some nice work by NESSC researcher @HaettigKatrin and colleagues at NIOZ, presenting a reconstruction of Atlantic ocean water temperatures which suggests a period of cooling in the Miocene. The paper can be found here: buff.ly/47YWz47
Very proud of .@JessicaVenetz handing over of PhD thesis on biogeochemical drivers of microbial #methane removal in eutrophic coastal waters. Supported by .@NESSCresearch .@ERC_Research at #microbiology .@RIBESresearch defense 30 Oct 1430 .@Radboud_Uni ru.nl/en/about-us/ev…
NESSC is happy to announce the PhD defence of @malavikasivan (@UniUtrecht) on Tuesday October 29th! The defence starts at 14:00 and can be followed via livesteam! Malavika studied a new technique to trace different methane sources. Read more here: buff.ly/3NaKqj7

NESSC researcher Ronny Rotbarth is defending his PhD thesis at @WUR next Monday, September 23rd, at 15:30. Before his defence, Ronny will host a lunch workshop on the 'Resilience of Polar Regions' starting at 12:10. Everyone is welcome! #PhD #NESSC buff.ly/4esHcTI
Another NESSC project nearly finished! On Thursday September 19 NESSC researcher Louise Fuchs will defend her PhD thesis at @UniUtrecht Hall! The defence starts at 14:15. Read about Louise's project here: buff.ly/3GdQJit buff.ly/3MmONqS
New #preprint on light limitation of poleward #coral #reef expansion during past warm climates! Read all about it here: essopenarchive.org/doi/full/10.22… With Thomas Brachert, @AppySluijs and @MiddelburgJack
Happy to share our latest work on global inland-water nitrogen biogeochemistry and how it changed during the century. @NESSCresearch @UUEarthSciences @UUGeo nature.com/articles/s4422…
The breakdown of nitrogen in rivers systems has rapidly accelerated in the 20th century, a new NESSC study by Junjie Wang and colleagues at @UUgeo shows. These natural processes have accelerated up to three to six times. Read more about the study here: buff.ly/3LWrOmv
A new NESSC paper is out! Researcher @HaettigKatrin and her colleagues at NIOZ have unravelled a new puzzle piece on alkenone isotopes, which indicates a sensitivity to variable light conditions. Read the paper here: buff.ly/46MnEqZ
NESSC is happy to announce the PhD defence of Gerrit Müller (@UUgeo) on Wednesday November 27 in the Utrecht University Hall! For his PhD, Gerrit studied the role of chemical weathering of rocks, and how it impacts biology and climate change. Read more: buff.ly/3WqVk8F
Is the ocean a carbon sink or source? It depends, a new NESSC paper shows! Researchers from Nanjing University, together with NESSC researchers Junjie Wang and Jack Middelburg, created the first sink or source world map. Read more here: nessc.nl/storing-carbon… #UUGeo
A new NESSC study shows that groundwater with high concentrations of nitrogen will keep rivers polluted for decades. This is a legacy of past agricultural practices in the twentieth century, when large amounts of fertilisers were used. Read more here: buff.ly/4aU5nIA
Big news arrived today – NESSC's world class research has resulted in a ten-year funding from the NWO Summit grant! The EMBRACER consortium will continue NESSC's research, focussing on the knowledge gap between short-term and long-term climate change. nwo.nl/en/news/from-q…
Link to the livestream for the June 10 PhD defense of @shruti_setty now added!
NESSC is pleased to announce the PhD defense of @Shruti_Setty (@WUR) on Monday June 10, starting at 16:00! Shruti tackled abrupt extreme events in the Earth’s geological past - read more about her important research here: buff.ly/3UDgJdR
