NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research
@NCAR_Science
At @NSF NCAR, we study the Earth system, from oceans to exosphere: weather, water, climate, air quality, space weather + more. Operated by @UCAR_News #NSFfunded
We're working to chart a path forward for a resilient, sustainable society. 🌎 At NSF NCAR, we're committed to advancing our understanding of Earth system science, from the ocean to the exosphere, for the betterment of our planet. Get to know us: youtube.com/watch?v=swGsM1…
REMINDER: This evening, the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab road and parking lot, as well as nearby #Boulder Open Space trails, will be closed to the public for #4thofJuly from 4pm. The road will reopen tomorrow. Happy #July4th! 🎆
#Boulder area friends: Next Friday, the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab road, parking lot, and hiking access will be closed for #July4th starting at 4pm. The road will reopen on July 5. Thank you and have a safe and happy #4thofJuly!
🚨Scientists just captured the most detailed view of a solar microflare using the world’s most powerful solar telescope! The @NSF Inouye Solar Telescope reveals how tiny solar outbursts trigger massive energy bursts—key to understanding space weather 🌞⚡️🛰️nso.edu/blog/small-sca…
Thank you @boulderpolice for your quick response today. The road to the Mesa Lab is now open.
Boulder Police Department have the subject in custody. The road is now open. There is no risk to the public.

Chasers! NSF ICECHIP is looking for your help to obtain hail measurements. While we are out in the field, if you happen to have collected a large or interesting hailstone, feel free to bag it and place in cooler with the date, time and location to share with one of our teams…
#ICECHIP teams will be gathering data today in the upslope flow regime of northeast Colorado in hopes of collecting several hundreds of hailstones for isotope analysis and crushing.
Atmospheric signs of this past winter’s La Niña continue to weaken. As the tropics settle into ENSO-neutral territory, other patterns have a chance of influencing seasonal climate. Will La Niña re-emerge? Our blogger breaks down the odds. Read more: climate.gov/news-features/…
How will Atmospheric and Environmental Research be involved in ICECHIP? • Collect hailstones in coolers and estimate in-storm trajectories with custom models. • Observe hail melt via radar. • Design and deploy the Super Mobile Hail Observatories to measure hail fall speed.
Exciting day for our third graders at NCAR! They explored the wonders of Earth system science, learning about weather, water, air quality, and sun and space weather. Huge thanks to @NCAR_Science for inspiring the next generation of scientists! @SVVSDsupt @BuchlerStVrain
Professor Hanna Rose Shell has created an exhibition of both historical and contemporary photographs and collages, exploring the legacy of the Climax Observatory. Register here: eventsquid.com/event.cfm?id=2… @CUBoulder @CUArtsSciences @NCAR_Science

High-tech doesn’t have to mean high-carbon. The NCAR Wyoming Supercomputing Center brings sustainability into a data-heavy facility. With a LEED Gold-certified envelope, this project balances cutting-edge research with reduced energy. #EarthMonth bit.ly/42vRL4a
ICECHIP involves 12 universities, 3 research departments, and other insurance institutes, government agencies, & community groups. A global cross-disciplinary & interdisciplinary effort with these parties - promoting a high level of collaboration, coordination, & communication.
La Niña has ended, and the tropical Pacific is now in a neutral state—neither La Niña nor El Niño. Without those patterns influencing the atmosphere, it’s harder to anticipate seasonal shifts in rain or temperatures. Neutral likely lasts through fall. climate.gov/news-features/…
At NSF NCAR, we work tirelessly to advance atmospheric and Earth system science to help protect vulnerable communities, improve national security, and bolster economic vitality for a brighter future. ☀️ Learn more: youtube.com/watch?v=swGsM1…
