Mechanics of Materials Lab - University of Oxford
@MechMaterials
Mechanics of Materials Lab. Based at the University of Oxford (@UniofOxford, @oxengsci). Led by @MartinezPanedaE. Unraveling challenges in mechanics & materials
Our Oxford group website is now live! Check mechmat.web.ox.ac.uk… if you want to know more about who we are, what we do, what are our facilities, and to access our codes and papers. Important news and vacancies will always be posted there. Welcome!

📢New paper! Experiments and modelling are used to understand puzzling APT observations of strong hydrogen trapping in cold-drawn pearlitic steels. A collaboration with @easonchen0102's group (NTU, Sydney). Just out in @Acta_Materialia: doi.org/10.1016/j.acta… #hydrogen
📢New paper! We combine thermo-metallurgical weld modelling with phase field-based deformation-diffusion-fracture simulations to produce Virtual FADs for hydrogen transport pipelines that resolve the microstructural heterogeneity of the weld. Just out: doi.org/10.1016/j.ijhy…
📢 New paper! We map the conditions in which small scale fracture tests are valid, including the case of hydrogen-exposed samples. Through FE studies, the maximum load (J_max) is related to sample size and material properties, to design quantitative tests doi.org/10.1016/j.engf…

📢New paper! We predict the likelihood of marine ice cliff instability - a key driver for sea-level rise - using a new Mohr-Coulomb-based phase field fracture model. The third paper of Theo Clayton's thesis, just out in the Journal of Glaciology @igsoc: doi.org/10.1017/jog.20…
📢New paper! We present a new phase field model to predict intergranular corrosion. We applied the model to understand intergranular liquid lithium corrosion of ferritic/martensitic steels, a problem of interest to nuclear fusion. Just out in @Nature_NPJ: nature.com/articles/s4152…

📢 New paper! We combine phase field fracture/fatigue with a new stochastic meshing strategy for rough surfaces to unravel the role that surface roughness has on fatigue life. Surface roughness and fatigue strength are correlated. See: doi.org/10.1016/j.ijfa…

📢New paper! We combine experiments and modelling to quantify hitherto unknown individual effects of pH and chloride concentration on the corrosion kinetics of Mg alloys for biomedical applications. Just out in Acta Biomaterialia: doi.org/10.1016/j.actb… #biocorrosion #phasefield

*Please retweet* Thanks Applications are invited for two posts of Associate Prof or Prof of Materials in the Dept of Materials @UniofOxford. (Closing date for applications is 30 May 2025.) Advert link with details: my.corehr.com/pls/uoxrecruit…
📢New paper! We present a new computational framework that allows predicting concrete corrosion under natural conditions (without an applied current), and where the location of cathodic and anodic reactions is a natural output of the model. Just out: doi.org/10.1016/j.elec…
New paper! We propose a simple model to predict Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) failures, for the first time resolving the interplay between porosity, corrosion and cracking. The last paper of Evzen's PhD thesis. Check it out here: nature.com/articles/s4152…
Thanks to the generosity of IUTAM, we have funds to support the expenses (registration fees, lunch) of early career researchers who do not have enough funds to attend the symposium. If interested email [email protected] with abstract and motivation
We are organizing an IUTAM Symposium on Chemo-Mechanics this summer at Oxford and are bringing a very strong cohort of speakers. In addition to invited talks, there will be a poster session; see: chemomechanics.web.ox.ac.uk
We are hiring several undergraduate summer interns, kindly funded by @UKAEAofficial, @RoyceInstitute and @FaradayInst, to work on problems spanning batteries, hydrogen and corrosion. All details on our website: mechmat.web.ox.ac.uk
We are hiring a summer undergraduate intern to conduct simulations of high-temperature corrosion, funded/in collaboration with @UKAEAofficial. An 8-week internship for UK-based students. Interested candidates contact [email protected] with your CV and grades @SasaKovach
Despite the LHR issues, it seems that I will get to India after all! I will be giving seminar talks at IIT Madras on Tuesday (March 25) at 15:30 in KCB 222 and at IIT Bombay (March 31, 10:00 Civil Dept Seminar Hall). Looking forward to interact with many old and new friends
Predicting hydrogen - material interactions such as transport and embrittlement made (much) easier! We just published a two-part paper (doi.org/10.1016/j.engf… & doi.org/10.1016/j.engf…) on how to achieve this with COMSOL. The associated codes are here: mechmat.web.ox.ac.uk/codes

📢New paper! Just out in Nature Communications. Together with @DanielGMadrid11's group, we develop a multi-scale computational framework capable of predicting and optimising the thermo-electro-mechanical behaviour of 3D-printed multi-functional materials: nature.com/articles/s4146…
We are hiring! We are looking for a postdoc to work on the mechanics of solid state batteries, as part of @FaradayInst 's SOLBAT grant. Available for 1 year but can be extended. Join us in beautiful Oxford! Link: eng.ox.ac.uk/jobs/job-detai… #job #batteries @oxengsci RTs appreciated!
📢New paper! We combine welding process modelling and coupled phase field simulations to predict when hydrogen transport pipelines will fail, revealing the role of hard, brittle regions in the HAZ. Just out in Materials & Design: doi.org/10.1016/j.matd… #hydrogen #netzero
