A discussion of just some of the major trouble spots around the globe, none of which is easy to solve or bring to an end. My latest in @BulwarkOnline The World at War open.substack.com/pub/thebulwark…
I served with Colonel DA Sims in combat & peacetime in Iraq & Europe. I watched him deploy his division to Poland in the early stage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He is a brilliant commander, values-based leader & selfless soldier He should be a 4-star commander.
“Hegseth’s actions could shape the military’s top ranks for years. His insistence on absolute loyalty, backed with repeated threats of polygraphs, creates uncertainty and mistrust that threaten to undermine the readiness and effectiveness of the force” nytimes.com/2025/07/26/us/…
U.S. troops in Europe are not a Cold War vestige. They anchor transatlantic cooperation, respond to crises on three continents, enable cyber and missile defense, and reinforce the strategic trust. @MarkHertling on the dangerous idea to withdraw from Europe thebulwark.com/p/withdrawing-…
It’s “strategically shallow and operationally dangerous” to suggest further US troop withdrawals for Europe. Here’s why. My latest in @BulwarkOnline thebulwark.com/p/withdrawing-…
Had the chance to join my friends @jamiegangel & @danielsilvabook in beautiful Charleston last night for their book tour, the night “An Inside Job” became #1 on NYT’s list. Awesome tour & terrific book!

Putin belongs in court, not at the peace table. Latest in @BulwarkOnline
Donald Trump must distinguish between two kinds of peace. The first is a true peace between these warring nations that would last. The alternative is a ceasefire that ignores accountability—an invitation to new atrocities. New from @MarkHertling: thebulwark.com/p/vladimir-put…

We in the United States—and across the broader alliance—would do well to study the Baltics. Because they remember what tyranny is, and they know how to resist it. New from @MarkHertling: thebulwark.com/p/nato-new-str…
We in the US & across the broader alliance would do well to study the Baltics. If US leadership in NATO is waning (& it shouldn’t), I hope we reconsider & instead emulate the vision & courage of those in the Baltics. My latest in @BulwarkOnline thebulwark.com/p/nato-new-str…
A new friend of Gabriel Allon, and now introducing & referring many others to him, @danielsilvabook
