This is a haiku inscription stone (句碑, kuhi) by 菊舎 (Kikushō), a well-known female haiku poet and Buddhist nun from the Edo period and Yamaguchi Prefecture. "Softly, softly, the mountain pheasant cries — a day of little spring".
