Historic trash found inside Mammoth Cave. Flash cubes were individual flashbulbs used on early Instamatic cameras. Flash cubes were primarily used in the late 1960s and early 1970s but became less common with the advent of electronic flash units and built in flashes on cameras.

Today’s installment of historic trash found inside the Mammoth Cave, a beverage can. Before Mammoth Cave became a national park people were allowed to have food and drink on tours, so someone had 54 degree drink.

Today’s installment of Historic Trash found inside The Mammoth Cave - This Coca Cola bottle is from the 1950s, and for its age is in very good condition. Visitors were allowed to eat and drink inside the cave up until we became a National Park in 1941.

Ralph Waldo Emerson arrived at Mammoth Cave on June 9, 1850 for a visit that he would later reference in his notable essay entitled “Illusions” after seeing the famous Star Chamber.

We have been so busy showing our wonderful visitors the longest cave in the world we forgot it’s Cave Week. Well here it is, Happy Cave Week!!!

It’s that time of the year that fawns will be appearing in our park. Please adhere to speed limits and be on the lookout for these youngsters on our roads. If you are out hiking and see a fawn, please leave them alone, their mom is close by.



Today’s installment of historic trash inside The Mammoth Cave is a Hershey bar wrapper from the 1930s. Hershey chocolate bars were 5 cents from 1900-1969.


Yeah, we’re known as the longest cave in the world, but we have some pretty cool sites on the surface as well. Jack-in-the-pulpit(Arisaema triphyllum) at the historic entrance.


National Pack Rat Day is observed annually on May 17th. It's a day to reflect on the tendency to collect and hoard items, or to celebrate the real pack rats (woodrats). The Allegheny woodrat (Neotoma magister) can sometimes be seen near cave entrances.
