Make Votes Matter
@MakeVotesMatter
The campaign for Proportional Representation at UK general elections. We're cross-party. You can also find us on other platforms.
Proportional representation is gaining in popularity - 73% of the French want it for the next parliamentary election, and it's popular in the UK as well. Americans should embrace it, too.
🇫🇷📊 Près des trois-quarts des Français (73%) sont favorables au passage au mode de scrutin proportionnel pour les prochaines élections législatives, une opinion largement favorable dans toutes les familles politiques, et même chez les proches de LR (62%).
Next week, we're excited to invite you to a webinar with Professor John Curtice! Join us to discuss what the data tells us about Britain's political system and its possible futures. Event organised in collaboration with @UnlockDemocracy. Sign up: secure.unlockdemocracy.org.uk/page/174289/pe…

🚨 WATCH: "They now need to go the whole hog & introduce proportional representation for Westminster elections." On @petercardwell's @TalkTV show on Saturday I welcomed the news on #VotesAt16 and called on the government to introduce #fairvotes for all elections! #Talk #LibDems
"First Past the Post has encouraged a focus on ‘Mondeo man’ – the idea that there’s a small number of constituencies needed to be won. That’s a reductive mentality. Politics has to be about everyone, everywhere." Well put, @AndyBurnhamGM 💯 bylinetimes.com/2025/07/19/and…
#getPRdone “Though lowering the voting age was a manifesto promise, real electoral reform was nowhere in the manifesto. Real reform would mean abolishing the broken, discredited, untrusted and unsafe first-past-the-post system.” @pollytoynbee theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
💬 "This is not democracy. It's not what the Chartists and Suffragettes fought for." Human rights campaigner @PeterTatchell told us why he's calling for a fairer voting system. We've had enough of governments supported by a minority of the public. It's time for real democracy.
🚨 No More First Past the Post Elections. 5 parties polling strongly, chaotic results, millions left unrepresented. We need Proportional Representation — NOW. @CompassOffice @UnlockDemocracy @MakeVotesMatter ✍️ Sign the petition: actionnetwork.org/petitions/2025…
Spot on. No system is perfect and fool-proof under extreme pressures, but a change to PR nationally would reinvigorate participation through fairer representation, and could help build consensus rather than division.
The government says it wants to "rebuild trust in our democracy". This needs to start with reforming the voting system to give everyone an equal voice. Thank you to @tomgordonLD @sarahjolney1 @ChrisLawSNP @alexsobel @DrScottArthurMP @ShockatAdam for raising this in Parliament.

⚠️ "Mayors serve many millions of people and manage multi-million pound budgets, yet can be elected by just a fraction of the vote" 💯 @AngelaRayner is right that politicians should not be elected to important offices by First Past the Post ⚖ The same is true of MPs
We urgently need some form of PR in place, that way EVERY vote would matter. More people would vote and the system would be fairer. It's time we were rid of first past the post.
❓If the government admits that First Past the Post is unsuitable for mayoral elections, why does it intend to keep it in place for general elections? Thank you @sarahjolney1 for raising this issue in Parliament. Whatever the election, FPTP is not fit for purpose.

Are politicians stupid, selfish, corrupt and all the same? Or are they just following the rules of a bad game? In a thought-provoking blog, MVM volunteer Paul Tait asks us to imagine the UK political system as a casino game. 👇 makevotesmatter.org.uk/news/2025/7/15…
💯 "We can't have MPs elected anymore on a minority of the votes in a particular constituency. And we definitely cannot have governments elected on a minority of the votes across the country." 📢 @AndyBurnhamGM speaking this weekend 🌹 #Labour4PR
