But we also need this government to build up its capacity to uncover where wealth is hidden. This should include greater investment in HMRC and a modern asset registries, so we know who owns what.
There are some immediate reforms this government could make to make the tax system fairer - like equalising capital gains tax rates with tax rates on income or taxing frequent flyers.
We've built an economic system where it's easy for the very-wealthy to conceal wealth and shield it from tax. We don't even have a complete record of who owns what. But this is a policy failure that can be fixed.
In the UK the top 1% hold more wealth than the bottom 70% combined. This wealth concentration is a problem because it starves our public services of vital funds, it concentrates power in the hands of a few, and distorts democracy.
