"The indigenous inhabitants of Macedonia are neither Serbs, nor Bulgars and, of course, not Greeks, but a separate Slavic nation - Macedonians. Political oppression has prevented the Macedonians from developing their own culture." Source: "Geografiya v shkole, โ 4" (1946) p. 5.

English historian Laurence Echard (c. 1670-1730), recounting the events of the Fall of Constantinople in his "Roman History", said: "Mehmed marched from Adrianople at the head of 300,000 men, Bulgarians, Serbians, Macedonians, Germans, Bohemians, Hungarians, and even Greeks..."

"For Georghis, Macedonia was no melting pot. Not now and not in the past. Any suggestion to the contrary, especially if it came from archaeologists in Yugoslavia, could be seen only as a calculated political attack." - Neil Silberman, "Between Past and Present" (1989)

"...the fight was not such much between Turk and Christian, as between Democracy and Imperialism; the democracy of the Macedonians against the imperialistic ambitions of the selfish little states around them."
"All the little states surrounding Macedonia wanted to grab her, and Macedonia did not want to be grabbed by any of them. In their selfish greed the governing cliques of all the little states absolutely disregarded the will of the people of Macedonia." (p. 241)

Greeceโs treatment of ethnic Macedonians remains a disgrace to this day. An 1981 amnesty by Georgios Papandreou for leftist civil war fighters did not apply to them. Their descendants are still discriminated against. faz.net/aktuell/politiโฆ
The medieval Macedonian saints Cyril and Methodius taught the Gospel in the Slavonic language and their disciples translated the holy books into the language of the Macedonian Slavs which we can still read. How nice that you can read curse tablets in 'Ancient Macedonian', though.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families and those affected by the terrible tragedy. As someone with a personal connection to the beautiful Koฤani, this tragedy has grieved me deeply. May God be gentle with the souls of the deceased and forgive us for failing our young ones.
