Growing our own fruit & veg peat-free in a community allotment.Doing our bit for pollinators with bits of rewilding & enhancing biodiversity as much as we can.
Peat-Free Partnership is urging the government to ban peat sales. Yes PLEASE. After an initial flurry of interest, it’s dreadful to see peat slipping back to garden centres edie.net/major-retailer…
Shiny brown conkers emerging from their spiny green cases. Fewer this year with most leaves attacked by leaf miners (top left) I collect, crush & store them (lower right). They contain saponins so make a good natural detergent #fruits #WildflowerHour
Autumn #Fruits are not very plentiful yet so it’s taken 3 days to collect these in Lymington. Black bryony, bramble, rosa rugosa, spindle, hawthorn, blackthorn, guelder rose #WildflowerHour

A novel pesticide has lethal consequences for an important pollinator. 100%mortality of mason bees. Thx @BristolUni for important research. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Look at these 100% allotment veggies cooking with #freeelectricity during #OctopusHour @OctopusEnergy Just a fraction of the cooking carried out! See more below👇@littlegreentip1

It’s like Christmas! Thx @OctopusEnergy for providing #freeelectricity from #RenewableEnergy for those with no solar panels! Cooked 6 meals in different ovens; tumble dryer used 1st time ever, house warmed ready 4 cold snap, car charged hair dried. How was yours @littlegreentip1

My aconites are stunning and the Tree Bumblebees love them. Aconite’s alkaloids are highly toxic so how do bumblebees survive? Interesting info here! #GardensHour tinyurl.com/3terye28

On a dull Saturday after about 48 hours of rain, these are looking perky: Salvia, Sunflower, Cornflower, Cosmos, Zinnia, Nasturtium #SixonSaturday

Look @Rhizowen!
I am delighted how many slow worms are living under the dustbin lid in our tiny city centre garden! I have heard that the name for a group of slow worms is a gloss… so look at our glossy huddle! So pleased that there are enough invertebrates to keep them fed and thriving.
It’s gone brown. Even The Solent is brown. Nothing shrieks out that summer’s over more than a walk on Pennington sea wall with its blizzard of brown seed heads of wild carrot, teasel, hemlock & ragwort @wildflower_hour @newforestranger Taken just as our 24+ hours of rain sets in

Ipomoea ‘Heavenly Blue’. I never grow any other because you get those purples of other varieties at the end of the day Heavenly Blue and that’s part of joy of this plant

Yesterday, I posted about a cheap fire pit I purchased to turn into a bird bath..... nearly 200 trail cam clips later, it's safe to say it's a big hit! I will mount a live stream camera on here tomorrow! I'm amazed how much it was used today! #GwylltHollow
So, #WildflowerHour asks for #climbingplants. Here in central #Lymington are hops, Humulus lupulus, giving a glimpse of the town’s social history. Hops are dioecious with separate male & female flowers. These familiar hops are female, always spiralling clockwise #wildflower_hour

Great to see Bokashi on #GardenersWorld @GWandShows. We’re big fans & use it to compost all food waste. Pics show how we make our own bran as Bokashi bran expensive . After tonight’s program, we’ll be producing our own microorganisms too!

It seems the majority agree with me!
Cucamelons. What do you think? I regard them as a complete waste of space and won’t be growing them again! #GardeningTwitter #GardeningX
In a #community allotment, everything is shared. Great if crops are abundant (see earlier tomato X). Great pleasure to count obe huge pumpkin & 16 butternut squash from just 4 plants. Doing something right! Plenty to go round @TransitionTog #GardeningTwitter #GardeningX
