This is the travel hierarchy in Scotland’s National Transport Strategy: bit.ly/2yqzfjg. Walking/wheeling is at the top: not cycling, not buses, not taxis, not cars. Yet time and again, this isn’t followed through in practice. Time for change!

Here's one on Pitt St which is made worse by end-on pavement parking. Reported several times.
Thanks for these examples: not acceptable, @Edinburgh_CC needs to do better! It's an offence under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 to obstruct footways (S59) and councils have powers (S91) to instruct or carry out removal of obstructing vegetation. legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/54/…
Here are some examples from Prestonfield- usually takes several reports to @edinburgh_cc and many many months to get sorted
All too common across Edinburgh neighbourhoods! 😠 If you have a hedge on your property, please be sure to keep it cut back to the pavement edge!
Overgrown hedge at 19 Stewart Terrace was reported to @edinburgh_cc on 14 Feb 2025. It doesn't appear any action has been taken. Council has statutory requirement to maintain pavement area. If this had impacted ROAD users it would have been sorted within days @LivingStreetsEd
Congratulations! Terry is a strong advocate for a walkable Edinburgh!
🧵 1/ We have some exciting news: Terry Levinthal has been appointed as Director of Edinburgh World Heritage!

Excellent to see another local campaign for safe and accessible walking! @LivingRent_Edi
Living Rent Lochend, a branch of the wider Scottish tenants’ union, is calling for zebra crossings to be introduced at set points in their community. bit.ly/3GxPSNs
Zebras without the blizzard of lights would be preferable (and cheaper to install), particularly in low traffic density and heritage locations. Here's the eyesore of poles in Randolph Place/Queensferry Street. No one waits for the signals to change. Waste of money.
Wonderful to see the new proper pavement being installed at Preston Street school, replacing the 'temporary' (5 years?) footway extension bollards. Decent pavements at every school, please! @Edinburgh_CC

"Roadworks... affect motorists, cyclists and bus users" AND pedestrians @BBCScotlandNews! Most roadworks aren't road repairs but works by private utility companies - who get away with murder with obstructions, poor reinstatements etc!
Why are there more roadworks in Scotland than ever before? bbc.in/3TAomll
Hardly a surprise: the Council's 'major junctions review' has never been properly budgeted for but has consumed a lot of unproductive time - of both staff and 'stakeholders' like us.☹️

Edinburgh is twinned wth Florence. Imagine the Piazza Della Signoria was like this?!
Politicians, Council NOBODY gives a keech that W. Parliament Square is a dangerous free private car park maintained by the Council. No cars can be ticketed.
Good to hear this from @CMO_England: "Transport planners should not just focus on bigger projects such as bike lanes, but also on everyday issues such as uneven pavements, which might put off someone with mobility issues from walking a short distance"
"Increasing physical activity has health benefits across the life course. As part of this, we need to make walking and cycling more accessible, and safer, as well as access to green space easier and more equitable." @CMO_England #ACY25
Fair to give credit to @lmacinnessnp, who introduced the first 'Summertime Streets' in 2019, a concept seemingly forgotten since the Covid pandemic. Pic: Victoria Street, 2019.
Finally!
This is the map of 'Summertime Streets' traffic restrictions: Lawnmarket and Cowgate especially wecome! See this link for details including access for loading, Blue Badges, etc. bit.ly/3GegCSX
Brilliant news from @Edinburgh_CC: several OldTown streets (including the Cowgate) to have significant traffic restrictions during this year's festival season! bit.ly/3GegCSX Something we've advocated for years, as pavements get overwhelmed with pedestrian numbers.

We need a fresh look at streets and pedestrian space in particular during the festival: a big issue before the pandemic that seems to have been forgotten..? See our comments for example on the ‘Summer Streets’ initiative 2019: bit.ly/3Afkmwz
