Structured literacy is different from traditional instruction because it is based on evidence from cognitive science and education research which has proven specific instructional strategies and elements to be more effective.

Students should be provided with regular opportunities to practice newly learned letter-sound correspondences through the reading of decodable words, phrases, and connected texts. The more they practice their new knowledge, the more likely they are to be able to internalize it!

What if students read aloud, read to a partner, read to a teacher, or listened to a model of fluent reading while following along with the text instead of independently reading during the school day?
