Today the Lords will be debating a Lib Dem "Fatal Motion" on the legislation that would allow foreign states to own up to 15% of UK newspapers. It is not plausible that foreign owners of British media will stay away from editorial decisions. We need to kill off this legislation

Congratulations to Jeremy Purvis on being elected Leader of our brilliant Lib Dem team in the House of Lords. Jeremy has a proud record standing up for our values, including enshrining our 0.7% aid commitment in law, and I look forward to working with him in his new role.

At the end of Thursday @RichardNewby3 will step down as Lib Dem leader in the Lords. The Lords Group, and the wider Liberal Democrat Party and family, owe Dick a huge debt of gratitude for his nine years as Leader. He has provided wise and calm leadership. We will miss him.

We are delighted that Jeremy Purvis has been elected as the new leader of the @LibDemLords in the House of Lords. Jeremy brings great political, parliamentary, party and campaigning experience to the role. The Group and the wider Party are looking forward to working with him.

Britain now needs a new, effective regulator, to stop the sewage scandal once and for all. Today we see again that there has been a dramatic increase in sewage spills. Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for customers, citizens and for cleaner water.

At last, the Government has listened to the Liberal Democrats. Since November 2022, we have been calling for Ofwat to be scrapped. If the Government do not commit to this, it would be a dereliction of their duty and a betrayal of millions of customers across the country.

People aren’t seeing the benefit of renewables because electricity prices are still tied to gas. That means higher bills for everyone, even though more of our power comes from cheaper renewables. We must break that link to cut energy bills for everyone.

We mourn the loss of our own David Alliance, a Lib Dem peer for 21 years. He was a great servant to business and industry in this country, and had a real love for the Liberal Democrats, which the Party always so appreciated. We send our love to Homa, his family and friends.

Last night, @LibDemLords forced a vote on our amendment on statutory paid leave for carers as part of the Employment Rights Bill. Sadly neither Labour nor the Tories supported us, but we will continue the fight. This is something @EdwardJDavey speaks so passionately about.

This evening @BaronessKramer's amendment to the Employment Rights Bill which would put in place regulations to protect whistleblowers passed the Lords with a healthy majority! It is important that victims of inappropriate treatment have a voice. The Government should listen.

Years of terrible energy policies under the Conservatives pushed up everyone’s bills, and this Labour Government has failed to prioritise cutting them.
