The people in the photo enjoy reading through kilometres of documents produced by the secret services, trying to extract any trace of meaning from them. It was a great joy to co-organise a panel on preventative policing and repression in the USSR and Czechoslovakia at #ICCEES2025

Spent 4 days in London at a fantastic #DigitalHumanities & #RSE summer school hosted by @kingsdigitallab. Now stuck in a loop: 🔁 “I need to rewrite all my code!” 🔁 “Must try this new methodology!” 🔁 “Wait… thesis!!” PhD life in a nutshell😄 Thanks to all the organisers!
The topic of my thesis - the fate of "repeaters," or re-convicted political prisoners under Stalin - is becoming unexpectedly timely, as reports suggest Russian police have resumed this practice: theins.ru/obshestvo/2820…
💔Nadezhda Rossinskaya, who also goes by the name of Nadine Geisler, helped Ukrainian refugees via the NGO Army of Beauties, which she founded shortly after the war began. Today, she was sentenced to 22 years in prison for treason. novayagazeta.eu/articles/2025/…
Even when Putin’s people do something sinister, they manage to screw it up. They "restored" a Stalin monument at a Moscow metro station, despicable and pathetic on its own, but weren't able to match the quality of the original sculpture (left).
Spent a wonderful two weeks working with Soviet documents at @HooverArchives. Heading home with 3.5 GB of copied materials, recharged by the sunshine and Stanford's energy.

The Russian MVD used the term 'traitors of the Motherland' (предатели Родины) for the first time in its official communication. You're on the right path, comrades!
В МВД впервые назвали «предателями Родины» россиян, объявленных в розыск 🔽 t.me/istories_media…
One of the outstanding independent Russian media outlets, which covers topics such as political repression, is in desperate need of donations: en.zona.media/article/2025/0…
I was delighted to have a special guest at my presentation at the PGR work-in-progress seminar at @UonHistory today.

The Museum of Moscow, which has documented the Russian capital’s history since 1896, has removed a section of its exhibit on Soviet-era repressions amid external pressure, Russian journalist Ksenia Basilashvili reported on Tuesday. ⤵️
Finished my first semester of teaching today by discussing with students this Soviet postcard from 1942

In this photo, I’m smiling, but 10 minutes later, I was almost in tears listening to a touching paper by a fellow panelist about parenthood in the Gulag. Thanks #ASEEES24 for the opportunity to connect with such wonderful specialists working on gender and the Gulag.

Fantastic panel on the developments in the Gulag studies at #aseees2024

Do not forget the 'ordinary' political prisoners, who did not intend to fight the regime
Pediatrician sentenced to over 5 years in prison for criticizing Russia's war in Ukraine in front of patient — despite lack of evidence Nadezhda Buyanova, 68, allegedly called a young patient’s deceased father a "legitimate target" for Ukrainian forces. theins.press/en/news/276198
