I wrote this about the genius of Barry Lyndon, my all-time favourite film which is unique among historical dramas for really getting the strangeness and distance of the past thetimes.com/comment/column…

Archaeologists of Twitter - I found this during a walk round the fields at Rothamsted, Harpenden this morning. Is it a flint tool? It’s tactile, seems weighted and fits easily into a hand. #archaeology #flinttool ???

Things have been a bit topsy turvy recently following my laser eye surgery for a retinal tear (and another round tomorrow 😱), but I love this skewed photo taken my husband when we ventured in London earlier this week!

What a delight to be interviewed by Queen of the Gothic @EssieFox about my book #Fyneshade and the enduring appeal of the old dark house.
Episode 2 of my podcast, Talking the Gothic, features castles and country houses - and then a fascinating talk with the author @KateAGriffin about her novel, Fyneshade - an ancient and isolated English country house - and all the secrets it holds. substack.com/@essiefox/note…

This is the most extraordinary story in the Sundays. If you’ve read The Salt Path or seen the film, it’s a proper marmalade dropper.
Penniless and homeless, Raynor and Moth Winn found fame with The Salt Path: the story of their 630-mile walk to salvation. It became a global bestseller and was adapted into a major film. But we can reveal it wasn’t the whole truth. @chloehadj Read: bit.ly/3GtJXsy
A friend reported eye symptoms to her GP who referred to hospital the next day. The consultant diagnosed a torn retina and performed laser surgery on her in his lunch hour the same day. When the NHS works, it works brilliantly.
