Yeah....I'm not gonna lie I can't defend USM MJ now that its ending. The romance is barely touched upon and she has no role in the story outside of the first volume. It sucks :((
Now that they announced the ending I will say I am really disappointed in MJ's role in USM. (1/6) To me Spider-Man stories are at their best when both Peter and MJ are equals, when we can see how different they actually are but also how they complement each other
the whole “superman shouldn’t look human” thing always amuses me because you can believe an alien species can fly and shoot lasers out of their eyes but them sharing a resemblance to an already existing real world species is where you draw the line

That's why it feels like a bastardization of Byrne's messages to me. Human is used as a metaphysical concept and not as an allegory for being an American. Could it have been done better? Yeah, and ngl the Els are getting fumbled but its not...too terrible
A big reason why I feel that scene has been so divisive is a disagreement over what the word 'human' means in context. I believe Gunn intended it to mean 'I'm a person', without realising how it could read within the context of the 'alien as immigrant/Earth as America' metaphor.
