Daggerfall is literally the size of Great Britain, it released in 1996. The novelty of size wears off when you realise its wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle. A lot of nothing is not a valid compromise for less of something.
Something about this 2d style creates a sense of depth and scale that I haven’t seen any actual game accomplish. Not Zelda, not Elden Ring
