Man United broke Brentford’s transfer fee received record when they signed Stewart Houston in 1973. They paid £55k, beating the £50k the Bees received from Blackburn for John O’Mara the previous year. The record stood until Andy McCulloch moved to Sheff Wed for £60k in 1979.
