Saving the planet, I’m told, requires abolishing capitalism. We need “an environment that provides for all people” says @AOC. Greed “is literally destroying our planet," says @SenSanders. Their answer is: socialism. They’re wrong—free markets protect nature better.
When he won his Nobel prize, Al Gore said the Arctic summer may be ice-free by 2014. Later he said it was LIKELY by 2016. Those dates came and went. There's still LOTS of ice. Turns out alarmists' predictions are alarmist. But they grab headlines. We debunk here:
.@johanknorberg warns America, “Don’t get cocky.” Look at his country, Sweden - politicians passed socialist policies. “It almost killed the Swedish economy.”
Yellow Corp was one of America’s biggest freight carriers. Then the Teamsters threatened to strike. Within days, Yellow went bankrupt. 30,000 jobs gone. Economist @MissLiyaP of @Mercatus points out how unions kill their own jobs:
In England, people get arrested for “hate” speech. It can happen in Scotland and Canada, too. @ezralevant of @RebeLNewsOnline explains how banning hate speech creates MORE hate. Here’s our FULL conversation:
America's military spends more than China and Russia combined. In fact, more than all other top ten militaries put together. Our spending goes to things we shouldn't be doing in the first place, says Eric Gomez of @CatoInstitute:
.@naomibrockwell says, "privacy is fundamental to a free society.” She lists some of the many ways that my privacy is being violated. She persuades me to delete some of the apps on my phone:
You give environmental groups $BILLIONS. Think that money goes to clean rivers and forests? No. You donate to groups like the NRDC and “that donation goes to a lawyer suing someone," explains @ts_fisher. It’s why we can’t build things today!
People say "Capitalists get rich by taking money from others—Jeff Bezos’ $50 billion means the rest of us have $50 billion less!" Bunk. That’s MYTH 1 in my “Myths about Capitalism” series. It’s wrong, says economist @danieljmitchell, because the economic pie grows:
“I don’t want to be anything like California!” says one frustrated truck driver. But too bad, because he lives in Pennsylvania, which decided to AUTOMATICALLY copy California rules. Now trucks in Pennsylvania will cost $50,000+ more!
Tawanda Hall owed $22,000 in property taxes. So her town took her $308,000 home! The politicians didn’t give back any of the excess money. The Supreme Court now says government can’t take more than it’s owed. But her county STILL hasn’t paid her:
.@MichaelMalice calls himself an anarchist, not a libertarian. He wants to get rid of ALL government. Even police, courts, and pollution laws. He says private companies would do those things better. I’m skeptical. We debate:
Environmental groups are now rich. In 2020 (the most recent data available), they collected $8 billion in donations. $8 billion! johnstossel.com/big-green-indu…
Big environmental groups say polar bears and bees are dying off! It’s not true. They say nuclear energy is too dangerous. Also not true. “Hysteria generates donations,” says @JonEntine, “by people who think they're doing good.” But many enviro groups now mostly do harm.
People call environmental groups underdogs protecting us from big bad companies. In reality, the enviros are now the big guys! “They have billions of dollars to not build a thing, but just to oppose building things,” @MarkPMills points out. Here’s how they stop progress:
The Supreme Court gave Trump the green light to keep dismantling the Department of Education. Good. The federal department is largely useless. It doesn’t educate a single child. Here’s why we don’t need it:
For years, Europe’s economy was about the size of America’s. Not today. Today, the U.S. is 50% RICHER--despite the EU having 100 million MORE people. What changed?
Power hungry politicians talk about their “admiration” for China. Give me a break.
