Santa Barbara comes alive with a festive look for its annual Old Spanish Days beginning July 30. It dates back to 1924 with live shows a traditional horse parade and homemade food. Many businesses and neighborhoods are adding decorations, and pins and posters are for sale.

In its 53rd year the prestigious Santa Barbara to King Harbor (Redondo Beach) race is underway. It is 80 nautical miles. The boats took off towards the Channel Islands at noon. Some will arrive tonight. Some will arrive Saturday morning.

A boat, abandoned for a week, has been destroyed and cleaned up from Butterfly Beach in Montecito. If left, it would have been a hazard and environmental concern. Marborg Industries and Heal the Ocean took on the task at low tide starting at 4:30 a.m.

A fundraiser for Tidy Seas will raise money this evening for their projects up and down the coast and out to the islands to keep trash out of the ocean. They are a solid non-profit that encourages volunteers individually, with friends or workers getting community outreach hours.

A derelict boat on Butterfly Beach in Montecito will be removed Friday at low tide. It's been there about a week. Abandoned and derelict vessels pose a threat to people and the environment. If it is broken up by waves there will be splintered wood on the beach and in the ocean.

A heavy presence of first responders including the Santa Barbara County Sheriff, Fire and Coroners office was seen at the slough by Goleta Beach today. Details on the incident have not been released. Recently a woman went missing in the area.

Power is back on after 6000 customers were in the dark Saturday night in downtown Santa Barbara and the westside. Edison emergency crews responded. The cause was not revealed. Restaurants with full tables had to quickly react. Thousands of dollars in business were lost.
