My interview with @TopherField about the absurdity of the 10% Medicare Levy that applies to people earning $27k to $34k... and the @AusTaxpayers campaign to get rid of it. youtube.com/watch?v=gePY2u…
The always-interesting @ChavuraStephen has suggested that we should be sceptical of more development in existing neighbourhoods as it may "destroy good suburbs", and we should open up more land instead. I half agree, and outlined my arguments below.
I half agree with you on this. Developing out is better than developing up, though that will require cutting some red and green tape. To paraphrase Dr Strangelove, we should "learn to stop worrying and embrace suburban sprawl"... by making it much easier for new Greenfield…
Some people are debating the morality of the US dropping two nuclear weapons during the 2nd World War. This is my take.
A month before dropping the bombs, the US intercepted Japanese diplomatic cables that showed the Japanese were willing to surrender, on the condition that their imperial system be retained. The allies insisted on unconditional surrender, the Japanese delayed their answer, so the…

No economist in Australia is ideologically closer to Argentinian President Javier Milei than Dr John Humphreys. Worth a follow of his X and his Substack. @JohnHumphreys99

What are the biggest political X accounts in Australia, including current & former politicians, and political commentators?
The only logically coherent positions on coal is to either have coal mining & coal-fired power... or to shut down coal-fired power and stop coal mining. The position of the major parties is incoherent, where they attempt to phase out coal-fired power while retaining our coal…

Update on the inexplicable 10% Medicare Levy. The government manually indexes the Medicare Levy thresholds each year in the budget. As of 1 July 2025 the new thresholds are: $0-27k = 0% $27-34k = 10% >$34k = 2% The indexing is good, but the 10% threshold should be abolished.
I've raised this before, but it's worth repeating. The Medicare Levy is often described as a flat 2% tax on everybody's income... but that is not correct. In reality, the Medicare Levy thresholds are: $0-26k = 0% $26-32.5k = 10% >$32.5k = 2% In other words, the Medicare Levy…

Lots of recent discussions about Iran's nuclear program in recent weeks, for obvious reasons. Worth unpacking the story a bit more, to give proper context. Iran had the capacity to enrich to 90% (weapons grade) quickly & easily any time over the last few years. Thankfully they…
The NSW government claims that their budget deficit is "only" $5.7 billion in 2024/25 and $3.4 billion in 2025/26. That would be bad enough, but they are actually reporting the somewhat misleading "net operating balance", which ignores a big part of their spending. The more…
The risk with the Iranian war is that it will either increase the incentive for Iran to pursue a nuclear weapon in the medium term, or it will require continued escalation to pursue regime change. Both are bad outcomes. The least bad realistic option is to allow Iran to have…
