@JohanWinn
Lead Scientist @E11BIO. Former postdoc with @nspruston and lead of MouseLight project @HHMIJanelia. Developing technologies to study connectomics and NeuroxAI.
Today we are sharing the progress we have made towards dramatically reducing the cost of whole-brain connectomes! We believe this is vital for unlocking new disease treatments and human-like AI. Extremely proud of the team we have built at E11 Bio🔥!
E11 Bio is excited to share a major step towards brain mapping at 100x lower cost, making whole-brain connectomics at human & mouse scale feasible (🧠→🔬→💻). Critical for curing brain disorders, building human-like AI systems, and even simulating human brains. 1/N 🧵
Exciting opportunity for viral engineering wizards to come join our mission to map the mouse brain!
🚀 Join Our Team! We're seeking a Scientist and Research Associate to drive In Vivo Circuit Mapping and push the boundaries of whole-brain connectomics. If you're passionate about moonshot neuroscience and skilled in viral labeling, apply now! #hiring
Such a revealing moment—seeing hippocampus build a state machine for tasks in an orthogonalized manner! Truly honored to work with amazing @weinan, @JohanWinn @nspruston, and @HHMIJanelia team on this brilliant paper (a big milestone in my opinion)!
1/12 How do animals build an internal map of the world? In our new paper, we tracked thousands of neurons in mouse CA1 over days/weeks as they learned a VR navigation task. @nspruston @HHMIJanelia, w/ co-1st author @JohanWinn Video summary: youtube.com/watch?v=yw_4uV… Paper:…
🚀!
This summer, I’m interning at @E11BIO in SF as an ML fellow! We'll further push my previous work on automated connectome proofreading. Let’s have coffee and chat about AI & vis for bio/neuro if you're in the area! Collab w/ @srinituraga 🧠 #connectomics #AI @Convergent_FROs
Just Published: A look inside @FutureHouseSF, the nonprofit trying to build an AI scientist. We sent a photographer to their HQ in San Francisco and interviewed both co-founders, @SGRodriques and @andrewwhite01. Check it out in the link below.
I’m excited about this highly collaborative project by @sunw37, @JohanWinn, and many other talented contributors. Read more about how our @HHMIJanelia team imaged thousands of neurons in mouse hippocampus as mice learned cognitive tasks over several days: janelia.org/news/mapmaking…

"Premature optimization is the root of all evil" is a great example of the halting problem
Exciting! 'Space is a latent sequence' & CSCG theory of hippocampus we developed at @GoogleDeepmind and @vicariousai gets strong support in this @Nature paper with a set of ingenious animal experiments, neural recordings and analysis. Congrats @sunw37 @nspruston @JohanWinn...1

This has been an amazing collaboration with a host of talented people! Early on @sunw37, @nspruston and I had very high-level discussions on how to design an experiment to "close the loop" between neuroscience and AI. I like to think that we have done just that :) What a ride! 🚀

I love the EU, but it must radically change to foster a stronger startup culture. I can’t help but notice comparing EU vs. US biotech startup sites, that their ‘team’ pages often reveal a reluctance to put (young) scientists and technical experts in charge.
Dileep George has fundamentally changed the way I view the hippocampus so very excited to dig into this new paper on cortical columns and thalamic connectivity :)
Happy to have this published ...finally. Have a look if you are interested in understanding cortical columns, microcircuits, and the thalamus. Stay tuned for threads unpacking the paper... @lazarox8 @antoine_dedieu @jl_marino @ScienceAdvances science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
Great article by @NikoMcCarty in @AsimovPress focusing on our work at E11 Bio to scale connectomics to entire mammalian brains. Tackling the most devastating neurological conditions and unlocking brain-inspired AGI requires rapid innovation!
Can we treat brain disorders by restoring neural connections? For centuries, neuroscientists could only guess. But connectomics—a method seeking to create a 3D model of every neural connection in the brain—is moving closer to providing answers. @E11Bio is at the forefront...🧵
Scientific research has been held back by the very systems driving it. There’s no shortage of intelligence among our scientists, nor creativity and hard work. But there are essential technologies missing.
Congratulations Andrew!
Congratulations to Andrew Saxe (@SaxeLab, @swc_neuro & @GatsbyUCL), who has been promoted to Professor at UCL 🎉
I often like to (half jokingly) tell people that we at E11 Bio are the SpaceX of biology, so I'm really excited to see this article by @ashleevance (Elon Musk biographer)! Excellent article explaining the challenges facing the field and our approach to overcome them.
Some very, very big news from Brain Land this morning. The lab @E11BIO may have found a path to create full brain maps faster, cheaper and better than ever before. This could be a very big deal because . . . bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
