I met Woody Williams in the late 90s when he spoke at my alma mater- Marshall University- in Huntington, WV. He lived not far from campus. His story is truly remarkable. The Huntington VA Center is named after him They laid him to rest near where I grew up in Dunbar, WV.
The Marines rejected him for being too short. But when tanks failed on Iwo Jima, he proved them wrong anyway. In 4 hours, he destroyed 8 concrete bunkers that had stopped tanks and infantry. Here's how one "too short" man became an American legend:
