I'm excited to share that our latest research, "Mapping the loss of flagellar motility across the tree of life", in which I was a co-author, has been published in @ISME_microbes Journal! 🧪🦠Huge thanks to all the co-authors! 📖 Read the full paper here: academic.oup.com/ismej/advance-…
"Easy come, easier go: mapping the loss of flagellar motility across the tree of life" 🌱🔬 We analysed ~11,000 bacterial genomes to examine how flagellar motility has evolved 🏊♂️➡️🛑 @UNSWBABS @UNSWScience biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
In our defense we study swimming, not jumping. Happy @UNSWBABS lab photo @bmh2024Melb - our first #squad conference all together since 2021! #bmh2024

Congrats to the recipients of Peggy O'Neill Memorial Travel Award 2025👏🥳🥳. ✨ Xuanlin Chen from Victor Sourjik’s lab. ✨Alejandra Arango from Vijay Parashar’s lab. ✨Jacob Scadden from Matt Baker’s lab. Thanks to Blast community! #blastmeeting2025
Exciting news! 🚀 Our latest research, published in @MicrobioSoc journal, explores the nisin O cluster dissemination, candidate leader peptide proteases, and regulatory systems. Read more: microbiologyresearch.org/content/journa…
New paper alert! The nisin O biosynthetic gene cluster lacks a leader-peptide cleaving protease but is distributed across different gut-associated genera. @MicrobioSoc @NarbadLab microbiologyresearch.org/content/journa…
Congratulations to Dr. Jacob Scadden from @UNSW for receiving the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) Award for an outstanding poster presentation at #blastmeeting2025! 🏆👏 Well deserved! #blastmeetings #microbiology @FEMSmicro
It is an honour to have been awarded the FEMS Microbiology Reviews outstanding poster award at the #blastmeeting2025! Thank you to the judges and all those who came to my poster and talked all things flagellin! @FEMSmicro @UNSWBABS @UNSWScience @BlastMeetings
It was a pleasure to attend the @UNSW Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) awards last Friday. Great to see so many @UNSWBABS Labs receiving their awards for lab sustainability and honoured to receive the Silver award representing the Baker Lab! #sustainable

Our latest paper in #GutMicrobes explores how Bilophila wadsworthia and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron interact in the gut, leading to increased H₂S production and metabolic changes that may contribute to inflammation and disease. Read more: doi.org/10.1080/194909…
Nice explainer of our recent @UNSWBABS work to cobble together hybrid motors for baxterial swimming. Also great to chat to @newscientist! newscientist.com/article/245232…
1/2 By building nano-sized "Frankenstein motors", @UNSWBABS Scientia Associate Professor @phatmattbaker and Dr @PietroRidone have helped to piece together the evolutionary history behind the motors powering bacterial flagella.
Appreciative of highlight by Mike Manson @TAMU of our recent hybrid stator work in @JBacteriology. Enjoyed sharing a quality tequila @BlastMeetings 2015 w/ Mike in AZ and honoured by his enthusiasm in this accessible commentary. Thanks! @UNSWBABS journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/jb…
Thanks @AussieAstrobio for the invitation to present a talk on the evolution of the flagellar filament! A very interesting discussion on bacterial motility in extreme environments and early Earth! @UNSWBABS @UNSWScience 🌏🦠🌋

Last week the Baker Lab (@UNSWBABS) made the drive down to Melbourne to attend the @bmh2024Melb. A week full of science, networking and entertainment! Thanks to all those who came to my poster to find out more about the bacterial flagellar filament and made the conference a joy!

And congrats to Shruthi for a flash talk to conclude @bmh2024Melb her Honours year @UNSWBABS in fluidics to separate motile bacteria #bmh2024 (poster #106 and Janelle #155).
