In the present day, we tend to hear the word “art” & think of the thing produced…But in the philosophical tradition running from Aristotle to Aquinas to Jacques Maritain… art is one of the five intellectual virtues that pertain to the perfection of the intellect. ~Dr. H. Ragusa

Listening to LSU baseball on the radio as I edit an article on Tolkien’s views of faith and art for @JDVjournal. What a glorious evening.
Mine in the new @JDVjournal, breathtakingly illustrated by Blair Gordy Piras, a woman who clearly understands dogs. Thanks @Fitzthewriter for opening your beautiful publication to me!
It’s a treat to have a poem published in @JDVjournal — the issues are full of beautiful art, including custom illustrations for each original poem. Many thanks to editor @Fitzthewriter!
So pleased with this. @AmitMajmudar @ithinkiamsteven @KarenUllo
SPRING 2025 | ALTARS & WELLS We hope our readers are enjoying JDV Spring 2025, w/ art by Casey Langteau Johnson, essays by Fr. Michael Richard, Fr. Brad Doyle, Josh Brumfield, @Fitzthewriter, excerpt from by @KarenUllo, & poetry by A.A. Gunther, Steven Searcy, and Amit Majmuder!
Speaking of Harder, I have versions of a couple of his poems forthcoming in @JDVjournal. Harder is very, very good. I also have a version of an epigram of his about Martial that I hope will appear somewhere someday.
On Martial 10.47 (mentioned in the post), here's Henrik Harder's epigram that alludes to it:
"I’ve found that working with a palette knife...lets me layer on a lot of texture and focus more on the colors and shapes of a subject rather than getting caught up in tiny details." “Art, Faith, & Magazine Street," an interview w/ Casey Langteau Johnson jdvjournal.com/archive/art-fa…
"In the heart of Acadiana, beside a 500-year-old oak tree, the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist stands as a testament to the faith of the people and an architectural gem for the city of Lafayette." "And Our Hearts Praised God" by Fr. Michael Richard jdvjournal.com/archive/and-ou…
So grateful for the way @JDVjournal fest came together. Wonderful to spend time with @JcScharl @JMWSPT @HaleyCarrots @MrsKatyCarl @CatholicFoodie @TrampolinePoet1 and to meet Tim Gautreaux. What a blessing. Plus glorious to see Grace read from her fairy tale collection!
Really grateful to @jdvjournal for this beautiful reprint of the first chapter of #ToCrownwithLiberty in their spring issue, as well as for hosting me for their May book club last night. It’s so wonderful to see Catholic arts and letters flourishing in Louisiana!
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the @JDVjournal festival down in Covington - a highlight (one of many) was Tim Gautreaux's keynote, and the chance to talk with him. More: amywelborn.wordpress.com/2025/05/23/tim…
