Tonight is St Bride’s Eve marking the Celtic goddess cum Christian saint Brìghde and the light returning after darkness. Celebrated as Bridget of Kildare, her qualities are also localised in the Hebrides from whence come many invocations of our old indigenous Celtic spirituality.
In Hebridean tradition she’s also localised on Iona, with the lore (spiritual truth!) that she was carried to Bethlehem on the night of the nativity from her home on Iona to be the foster mother of Christ, the proof😉 of which is John Duncan’s painting: nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artist…
Sandeels have recently featured in the news due to the controversy surrounding the UK ban on sandeel fishing: tinyurl.com/3c7dezsp. On #Iona, a name referencing sandeels is interesting for a different reason. More: tinyurl.com/y98zu67k

#NameoftheMonth A lovely name with a gruesome yet seasonally appropriate history: according to tradition Tràigh Bàn (nam Manach) 'White strand (of the monks)' at the northern end of #Iona was where the #Christmas Eve massacre of 986 took place: iona-placenames.glasgow.ac.uk/names-of-the-m…

A reminder that this is happening tomorrow!

#NameoftheMonth #October, tattie holiday month. The name Losaid, referring to a feature located between Clachanach and Liana a’ Gheòidh, may have a surprising connection to potatoes: iona-placenames.glasgow.ac.uk/names-of-the-m…

#nameofthemonth Two names for the same croft, known in local #Gaelic as An Àilean Bhàn 'the fair meadow' and in English as Greenbank, reflecting the fine stretch of grassland around there above the shoreline south of Baile Mòr. iona-placenames.glasgow.ac.uk/names-of-the-m…

During the Celtic Revival a persistent tradition emerged which places #StBrigit on #Iona. How did this develop? Can place-names help us trace its origins? Read more: iona-placenames.glasgow.ac.uk/noble-foster-m… Image: ‘Saint Bride’ by John Duncan, National Galleries of Scotland
