July 21, 1959 – The first nuclear-powered merchant ship, the NS Savannah, is launched. It was a part of President Eisenhower’s ‘Atoms for Peace’ program, which promoted the civilian use of nuclear energy. The Savannah was one of only four nuclear cargo ships ever produced.
