The International Society for Microbial Ecology is a non-profit association and owner of @ISMEJournal @ISMEComms. Next symposium #ISME20, August 2026, Auckland
The ECS Committee is excited to explore Career Choices for Microbial Ecologists! This month, we’re featuring María A. Baustista. She encourages ECS to be adaptable and proactive in shaping their own path. Read her full interview here: isme-microbes.org/career-choice-…

Many phytoplankton are affected by climate change via changes in temperature & pH, but to winter diatoms, it appears the issue is light. Tricks to survive the ice-free future include proton-pumping rhodopsins 🔗rebrand.ly/jsfhiow #winterlimnology #diatoms #rhodopsins #omics

Global microbiology societies gathered in Washington, DC, USA, to unite microbial science with climate action and create a shared planetary strategy. 🔗isme-microbes.org/microbial-lead… @kcwrighton @IUMSmicrobio @ASMicrobiology @FEMSmicro @AMIposts @AUSSOCMIC #Microbes #climatechange

Congratulations to Noah Fierer, the winner of the ISME Winogradsky Award 2026. This award is dedicated to mid-career scientists who have substantially advanced the field of microbial ecology. 🔗isme-microbes.org/winner-of-the-… #MicrobialEcology #microbes #isme20

A microbiome that produces more methane may be a sign that your gut microbiome is a super-harvester, according to a new ASU-led study, allowing you to unlock extra energy from a high-fiber diet. Read more on: isme-microbes.org/is-your-gut-mi… #MicrobialEcology #microbes #microbiome

ISME is proud to support the “Advancing Mechanistic Microbial Science Using Fabricated Ecosystems” event taking place at the Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, United States, from 6-9 August 2025. For registration, travel and lodging, please visit: eco-fab.org/ecofab-2025-re…
ISME congratulates @Isabel_Laforest from @USherbrooke as the winner of the Alma Dal Co Award, recognizing her as an exceptional early-career scholar who has made important contributions to microbial ecology. 🔗isme-microbes.org/winner-of-the-… #MicrobialEcology #microbes #isme20

ISME is delighted to celebrate Janet Jansson’s outstanding lifetime contribution to microbial ecology and her enduring legacy in the field with the Tiedje Award. 🔗isme-microbes.org/winner-of-the-… #MicrobialEcology #microbes #isme20

Uri Sheyn et al. reveal that swirling ocean currents (eddies) create short-lived pockets that favor certain Prochlorococcus strains, showing how “ocean weather” shapes microbial diversity. 🔗isme-microbes.org/ocean-eddies-r… #Microbes #Prochlorococcus #mesoscaleeddies #nutrientcycling

ISME is delighted to support Georges Kanaan research trip to sample a wide diversity of microhabitats within Arctic sea ice.
How do we get the organisms that live within the ice? A sack hole is a hollow cylinder in which surrounding brine collects trickling in through brine channels in the ice. We use a field peristaltic pump to collect it as cleanly as we can.
Aboard the R/V Kronprins Haakon for microSHIFT 2025! Sampling to investigate community composition across different micro habitats in the ice. Thanks to @ISME_microbes for partial support to attend.
The ECS Committee is excited to explore Career Choices for Microbial Ecologists! This month, we’re featuring Pedro Beschoren da Costa, who reminds us that networking can offer valuable tools for the future. Read his full interview here: isme-microbes.org/career-choice-…
