28 July 1939 - On this day, archaeologists discovered the infamous Sutton Hoo Helmet at the Sutton Hoo ship-burial site. Associated with the Anglo-Saxon leader King Rædwald of East Anglia, the helmet served as both armour and decoration. (Picture, Mark Ramsay via Wikimedia).

24 July 1917 - On this day, Mata Hari was put on trial in France, accused of spying for Germany. Mata Hari was a Dutch exotic dancer whose travels between France, the Netherlands, Spain and Britain attracted attention. Following her conviction, she was executed by firing squad.

18 July 1942 - on this day, the first German jet fighter (ME-262) had its first test flight under jet power. This was nine months ahead of the British Gloster Meteor. However, the jet exhaust deflected off the runway, causing turbulence and preventing the elevators from working.

15 July 1966 - On this day, US forces in Vietnam began Operation Hastings to push North Vietnamese forces across the demilitarised zone. It occurred after Marine reconnaissance units began frequently engaging Vietnamese troops while on patrol (Defence Dept photo).

🇫🇷14 July 1789🇫🇷 - On this day, revolutionary insurgents stormed the Bastille armoury and prison after four hours of fighting. Although scheduled for demolition, the fortress had become a symbol of monarchical power. 14 July continues to be a national holiday in France.

12 July 1801 - On this day, a Royal Navy squadron pursued and defeated a larger Spanish-French fleet at the Second Battle of Algerciras. As darkness fell, and the fastest British ships caught up with the enemy, confusion spread and Spanish and French ships fired on each other.
