NEW & NOS: After year and half of reporting and writing, I'm thrilled to announce that WELCOME TO THE FAMILY: THE EXPLOSIVE STORY BEHIND FAST & FURIOUS, THE BLOCKBUSTERS THAT SUPERCHARGED THE WORLD is available to pre-order. Coming Nov. 25 @GrandCentralPub amazon.ca/Welcome-Family…
Update: @vvsfilms has Canadian rights to ICK. But it’ll be a digital-only release, date TBD.
Unfortunately @JosephKahn’s ICK isn’t playing in Canadian theatres this weekend like it is in the U.S. … but maybe an enterprising indie cinema here will step up? It’s a true banger. theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/revi…

Canadians who want to watch the new OFFICE spinoff THE PAPER will have to do so this fall either via Showcase (if you still have cable) and everyone's (no one's) favourite Canadian streamer, STACKTV. (It'll stream on the NBC-affiliated Peacock in the U.S.)

Recently learned that Cineplex, and many other exhibitors, are experimenting with "booth-less" cinemas. Which led me to recall my own experiences as a (terrible) teenage projectionist, and what happens when we lose such a long-romanticized space. theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/arti…
NEW: Nearly 11 months after it sparked the biggest controversy in recent TIFF history, Anastasia Trofimova's documentary RUSSIANS AT WAR is being released globally on Aug. 12, direct to consumers via website set up by producers. russiansatwar.com
Great Scott! The Canadian premiere of NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE will open @mmadnesstiff on Sept. 4. I can 100% guarantee that Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol's masterpiece will be *the* Toronto screening of the year. Crash Ticketmaster like Wii Shop Wednesday. #TIFF50
“By all means, newspapers and magazines should feature videos, essays, festival roundups, profiles. But all of those things rest on and are nourished by the fundamental critical confrontation with individual works.”
The Times's reassignment of four critics is one thing, but its downgrading of the so-called traditional review is altogether another: newyorker.com/culture/the-le…
Been banging my drum about Gen Z and young filmmakers for a while now. @MDFF has relaunched the Student Film Showcase at @TIFF_NET. These films are incredible but they need your attention! Big thanks to @HertzBarry for chatting with me and shining a light on these filmmakers.
"Student filmmakers are hugely underserved by the current landscape": How @MDFF is shining a light on what’s going on inside the walls of film schools across the country with a newly resurrected series @TIFF_NET theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/arti…

On the curious case of @TIFF_NET’s “artistically ambitious” Platform program, now 10 years old. #TIFF50 theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/tiff…
NEW: #TIFF25 reveals biggest titles, including world premieres of Gavras, Ansari, Michôd, Apatow (not that one) & N. American premieres of Safdie (Benny), GDT, Fastvold (in 70mm). But absent (so far) Guadagnino, Baumbach, Kogonada (huh), Cooper’s Springsteen pic, and big one: PTA

All this junket talk is inevitably going to lead to someone discovering and attempting to reappraise Joe Roth's AMERICAN SWEETHEARTS, which we must collectively not allow to happen.
Mentally, I'm here.
This is the line for concessions… outside the building
Big congratulations to one of Canada's finest
Blue Heron premieres on Aug 8th at 6pm and it is truly surreal to see a ticket link for just my film and not a block of shorts? It’s been a long time coming.
