The cancellation of Colbert’s show is not some deep indicator about the state of free speech or democracy. The freakout over this is embarrassingly overstated and badly undermines credibility when the real threats strike.
The sad part about the Trump-Epstein stuff is that we all know MAGA will lock arms and continue to support him even if the worst of it proves true. They don’t care about his character at all, or even if he commits crimes. He’s their guy.
Kudos to the WSJ team who resisted legal threats from the president to do journalism about the president.
The harsh MAGA reaction to the WSJ story makes a lot of sense when you realize how embarrassing it must be every time the news cycle reminds the country just how much of a sleaze bag their dear leader is. This man is their entire legacy—and he’s gross.
WSJ’s parent company Dow Jones, just now: “We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit.” If you thought anything different, you’re listening to jokers. WSJ’s got the goods.
