House of Lords International Agreements Committee
@HLIntAgreements
News & information from the House of Lords Committee on International Agreements. Produced by staff on behalf of the committee.
The session will cover recent developments in US trade policy and its impact on UK trading relationships, in particular in the context of the new trade strategy, and the direction of future negotiations with the US.
At 2pm IAC will take evidence from academic experts from the UK and US on the wider implications, key benefits and limitations of the General Terms for the UK-US Economic Prosperity Deal.
#IAC has also stressed that the urgency to publish the report demonstrates why current arrangements for treaty scrutiny are not sufficient. It urges the Government to prioritise allowing Parliament to undertake its scrutiny work effectively.
The report calls on the Government to clarify how Chagossians will be consulted in administering the Trust Fund for the benefit of their community, and asks for oversight of the development grant paid to Mauritius to fund economic development and welfare projects.
The Committee regrets the perception of the Chagossian community that their interests have been subordinated to the national interests of the UK, and calls on the Government to engage with Mauritius to establish a programme of resettlement to the islands.
The report concludes that the agreement is not perfect but protects the effective operation of the critical UK-US military base on Diego Garcia in the long-term.
#IAC has just published its report on the UK-Mauritius agreement concerning the Chagos islands including Diego Garcia. Please read here: publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld5901/ldse…
