If there’s one essay by an art historian that I would recommend an undergraduate to read, then this should be it! I keep learning so much about historical methodology every time I read this essay.

Remembering my maternal grandmother & her everyday ritual of reading an episode from the Manasamangal, in the month of Srabon. Her in-laws were from Barishal and worshipped the snake-goddess. Amma left us last year and so did the ritual of reading Manasa’s stories in the monsoon!

The idea that Yoga & Ayurveda are frozen in time and did not evolve or were not engaged with during Sultanate and Mughal periods is ahistorical. Fabrizio Speziale & Carl Ernst’s brilliant works are a must read, if one wants to learn more. 🧵 mentions some of their contributions

Read this post on Perso-Arabic characters in coins of Nepal till the end.
1. Few notes on the use of Perso-Arabic characters in coins of Nepal. The earliest use discovered so far is in early 17th-c coins in KTM that imitated tanka coins of Delhi and Bengal sultans of past centuries (not Mughals!). Not always clear if coins by a king or some merchant!

Wonderful thread by @nehavermani here; particularly for culinary historians and ‘foodies’ out there. Debunking #mythistory in this day and age is no less than a form of national service. #TheGreatMughals
Overconfidence with which Mr Pant has been spreading misinformation abt Mughal food history is infuriating, it feeds into false narratives abt the period. Platforms must also exercise caution.🧵my published work Mughal culinary knowledge & food practices that debunk his claims.

If the division’s reorganization cuts Ph.D. and language programs, Ollet says, it would signal “the end of [his] department, which is by most considerations the best program for South Asian studies in North America.” Didn’t realise we would be here so soon. But we are!
The Division of the Arts & Humanities is considering consolidating its 15 departments into eight, reducing language instruction, and establishing minimum class and program sizes, citing new federal policies and shifts in the “underlying financial models” for higher education.

Apparently, in 2025, “reading Wikipedia and watching a podcast” now qualifies you as a historian — as long as you yell about “Indic frameworks” and tweet in caps. So let’s talk, slowly and academically, about why formal training in history is, in fact, necessary.
Become a ghost. Forget attention. Just grow in private.
