It's official, friends: I'm writing my first book with @penguinrandom Feeling very grateful to @emmalleong and @melflashman and to all my therapy/coaching clients and Building the Builders subscribers (and you all!) for helping me get this far <3

5yo just experienced regular cable TV for the first time (via United’s in-flight DirectTV service), and is now weeping inconsolably upon discovering that she can’t rewind to the beginning of the movie :’(

“All I trust I give my heart to, all I trust becomes my own…” The best of my psychology was built on Oscar Hammerstein lyrics
~100% of the time someone’s accused of being “too ambitious”, the real problem is that they’re either chasing the wrong ambition or trading in real ambition for a self-soothing counterfeit If anything, this means they’re not being ambitious enough
Raise your hand if you’d give anything for such a performance review 🙋🏻♀️

Sometimes I try to think back and remember how I ever lived without Calendly Couldn’t have been a very pleasant or productive existence, at any rate
no one: 2yo: I don’t want to grow up @mbateman: Why not? 2yo: I don’t want to be big. I don’t want to be daddy Matt: You want to stay Adam? 2yo: Ya
This is what @Gena_I_Gorlin calls "builder's mindset," an agentic, personally defined ambition. It's a third alternative to a false dichotomy she identifies as drill sergeant (external validation) vs. zen master (passive outcomes). The "builder's mindset" connects to a "why."
My new goal for when I hit 40 is to be wise enough that I no longer feel compelled to plan major projects and deadlines around the symbolic significance of reaching a certain milestone by the time I hit 40 💪
Ideology (values, worldview) is inevitable, indoctrination is not. You can give children room to question and disagree or not. You can introduce things in a way that is accessible to their independent thought and understanding or not.
Children will be indoctrinated, they must be indoctrinated, there is no way to opt out Your only choice is what doctrine
Sigh
2yo: *eyes chutney* 2yo: Can I drink it? me: Your funeral buddy 2yo: *drinks* 2yo: It’ssss sssppicccccyyyyy @Gena_I_Gorlin: ??? me: Hm, I don’t think he knows what “your funeral” means
5yo just informed me that she has invented a “1-second airplane” that goes from Austin to Asia in 1 second, and she’s giving it away for FREE @bscholl, you’ve got your competition cut out for you 😬
Is it just a coincidence that I heard 2 separate people use the term “uncomfy” in different meetings today, having never heard it before? Not sure how I feel about this development
