The biology of genomic extremes: extra chromosome sets (polyploidy) and genes with rarely used codons. We study this in organ development and regeneration.
New article on line: Polyploidy promotes transformation of epithelial cells into nonprofessional phagocytes. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… #nonprofessionalphagocytes #Notchsignaling #polyploidcells #JNKsignaling #germlinecelldeath
Huge congratulations to Fox lab alum Dr Heidi Bretscher, who has accepted a faculty position at U Memphis! Her new lab will study metabolic signaling. She will be looking for grad students!

Thanks to @unccharlotte for putting on a great genome integrity symposium yesterday. And congrats to the lab's Erin Dickert on winning a poster prize!

We ask for everyone’s patience as we establish a parallel U.S. + other country fee system at Flybase IU
We have a call for support that has gone out to European labs, to support FlyBase-UK. We're asking our colleagues from labs in the US other countries to wait for a similar call to them that will go out in the near future, to support the US sites. We thank you for your patience.
The cancellation of Harvard grants has put @FlyBaseDotOrg on life support. The Flybase grant is at Harvard and everything else is a subcontract. This community resource is absolutely essential! philanthropy.cam.ac.uk/give-to-cambri…
Early-career researchers - Apply by Friday 2 May for a funded place at our Workshop 'Decoding whole genome doubling: Insights from evolution, development and disease' organised by @BastoRenata and @ZStorchova. biologists.com/workshops/deco… #BiologistsWorkshops
Congrats to Fox lab PhD student Josh Silva on passing his prelim and on earning honorable mention on his NSF GFRP!

Great week for Fox lab PhD student Erin Dickert- she earned Honorable Mention in a very competitive NSF GRFP pool and just passed her prelim! Congrats Erin!

New lab preprint! How do cells cheat death to maintain a long-lived gut epithelium? Answer- meet Loofah, a newly named cell adhesion protein! Excellent work by @Pr0fJess and team! Thanks to the NIH for support. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

One month left for early-career researchers to apply for a funded place at our Workshop 'Decoding whole genome doubling: Insights from evolution, development and disease' organised by @BastoRenata and @ZStorchova. biologists.com/workshops/deco… #BiologistsWorkshops
#DROS25 in the stem cell and regeneration session tomorrow (Saturday), 4-6PM, @Pr0fJess from our lab will present her work on an until-now uncharacterized gene that we name Loofah, and discuss its role in promoting long-lived, apoptosis-resistant cells in the intestine!

Two more Fox lab posters on Saturday from 1:30-3:30 at #DROS25 - both on DNA damage in mitosis! Satya Yalamanchi- 265S and Erin Dickert- 259S. Check them out!

#DROS25 did you miss Josh's talk on the genetic signature of polyploidy last night or have some follow-up questions? He will be presenting poster 249F today (Friday) from 2-4. Please stop by!
#DROS25 Tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 8PM, there is an incredible workshop on polyploidy. Josh Silva from our group will present a genetic screen for polyploid-specific regulation, done in collaboration with @BrianCalvi 's group.
#Dros25 workshop alert! Today at 8pm, Pacific Ballroom C - Go Big or Go Home : Polyploidy on the Fly. Excited to host this with @gavinrrice.bsky.social! We have an exciting line up of speakers and will hopefully have an engaging conversation on standardizing nomenclature!
#DROS25 Tomorrow (Friday) from 2-4, check out Fox lab MD/PhD student Jane Blackmer's poster (242F). She'll tell you about a huge EMS screen and her finding that a gene previously studied in synaptic transmission plays a critical role in cell division with extra centrosomes.

#DROS25 Tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 8PM, there is an incredible workshop on polyploidy. Josh Silva from our group will present a genetic screen for polyploid-specific regulation, done in collaboration with @BrianCalvi 's group.

Fox lab will be in full force at #DROS25 ! At tonight's opening symposium, the Larry Sandler award will be presented. Congrats to award runner-up Jake Klemm, who did outstanding thesis work in @theHarrisLab

And also a Fox lab alum- awesome! Glad to see this recognition Temi!
Congrats on this news feature to our postdoc @topjetH 👏🏽 guardian.ng/features/how-u…
New lab preprint- wondering where polyploid cells might be hiding in your tissue of interest? Presenting iSPy- a machine learning approach! Collaboration between our group, @RoederLab , and @PauFormosa 's lab. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
