I'm a husband, parent, & fan of all Vikings, Twins, Wolves & Hogs. I study school choice programs & other ed reforms in my spare time. All posts are my own.
Time to sum up the work products of the School Choice Demonstration Project in @ua_edreform at @uacoehp at @UArkansas for 2023. I can't resist doing it to the tune of "The 12 Days of Christmas," given the easy rhyming scheme. Here goes!
We've just posted a new working paper by @AngelaRWatson and Matt Lee. If you are interested in the data and trends on homeschooling in America, then it's definitely worth checking out. @edchoice @JHUEdPolicy @EdEconKSU1 @JHUeducation
Interesting descriptive study on pandemic enrollment shifts & their possible causes: "Between 2019 and 2025, the fraction of Americans reporting satisfaction with public education dropped by 12 percentage points" @DeAngelisCorey @pauldiperna @Dyrnwyn educationnext.org/school-enrollm…
A mere 15 months after publication, The Public Purposes of Private Schooling is about to exceed 10,000 unique accesses, ranking in the 99.9th percentile among all articles published that quarter. If you haven't downloaded it yet, be our #10,000! @AlisonHeapeJohn @SarahR_Morris
STUDY ALERT: A student matching study of TN public school students finds "Post-pandemic, in 2021-22 and 2022-23, #CharterSchool students demonstrate greater academic growth." @RonZimmer8 @charteralliance @Dyrnwyn @DeAngelisCorey @MichaelPetrilli edworkingpapers.com/ai25-1225
See, it's possible to write about scholarship tax credits without defaulting to the inaccurate, loaded term "vouchers."
This point is often missed. #SchoolChoice is a quality-of-life issue even for families who are inclined to enroll their child in their neighborhood public school. They are comforted by having an exit option. @MQ_McShane @RonMatus1 @PatrickRGibbons open.substack.com/pub/informedch…

Read this excellent, though sobering, exchange between @jal_mehta & @rickhess99 about the politicization of contemporary education research. We are working @ua_edreform, every day, to change that! Make the journey with us. aei.org/op-eds/how-edu…
Had a wonderful meeting today with the Indiana Secretary of Education @SecJennerIN. My ultimate career goal is to become a state Secretary of Education. I will make a more formal announcement in August, but I will be on the job market after graduation this December with my Ph.D.
My take on downsizing the U.S. Department of Ed is here. Waste is apparent and should be cut, but the collection of national stats has been a unique function of the federal government for 160 years & must be preserved & enhanced. @ua_edreform @hpatrinos washingtonstand.com/news/trump-get…
That's why we built something different and special here @ua_edreform!
In education research, professional associations, leading journals, hiring committees, & grant-review committees have institutionalized mechanisms that squelch competing views. I mean, the AERA recently released its 2026 conference call for papers, and the list of suggested…
NEW STUDY: "Parents also revealed substantial tension between their conception of school quality and the way it is operationalized in the (A-F) report card" based on focus groups. @iskingsb @hmatthewlee @matthewladner mdpi.com/3399058 #mdpieducation via @EducSci_MDPI
"Schools can then serve their communities more directly, without becoming battlegrounds for ideological control. Importantly, as scholarship by Patrick Wolf [@FlowTap1] and his colleagues has shown, such pluralism can also strengthen democratic values." #SchoolChoice #abed
.@laurameckler of @wapo does a great job of explaining the new federal #SchoolChoice initiative in How a 'Big Beautiful Bill' provision could accelerate a shift toward private education. @alexanderrusso pbs.org/newshour/show/…
STUDY ALERT: "Familycentric schooling, with its approach of welcoming parent knowledge in the classroom and working alongside professionals to support young people in their learning and engagement in school, could be a solution to...encourage young people to reengage with…
Great survey study by @hamlind1 & Curt Adams finds student & parent views of the identity & values in #CatholicSchools do not vary based on school racial demographics. Catholic schools are, well, catholic! @kportermcgee @marcportermagee @AlbertxCheng digitalcommons.lmu.edu/ce/vol28/iss1/…
