Women farmers in Foladi village, Bamyan, share how @FAO wheat seed support improved their yields, skills & confidence. With few livelihood options, FAO’s principled, gender-sensitive agricultural assistance helps ensure women remain central to food production & nutrition efforts.

With @WorldBank support, @FAO rehabilitated 1.8 km of irrigation canal in Bamyan, bringing water to homes and farmland. More than 680 people, including 55 women, gained short-term jobs during its restoration. #EveryDropCounts 💧

The recent flash floods have severely impacted multiple provinces. In Wardak alone, over 50 canals & 885 hectares of farmland have been damaged, affecting more than 18 200 people. @FAO continues to assess these impacts and is planning urgent recovery support with partners.

📢 Flash Flood Risk (July 13–15) Moderate to high risk of localized flash flood in eastern (Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, Nuristan) & southeastern (Khost, Paktika, Paktya, Logar) provinces due to monsoon-related rainfall. Risk may extend to parts of central & northeastern regions.

Following last year's flash floods in Baghlan, @FAO and partners distributed livestock restocking packages to 500 vulnerable families to help them restore their livelihoods. Each package included 2 ewes, 2 lambs, 250kg of wheat straw, a feeder and a drinker each.

With support from @WorldBank, @FAO is constructing 165 raisin houses in the central, northern, southern and western regions. Each can store up to 15MT of grapes, which will help Afghan farmers to reduce post-harvest losses and boost incomes through better drying and storage🍇

In Demirdad, Wardak, recurring floods have wiped out Sayed Hikmatullah’s orchards year after year. Despite his efforts to rebuild, he continues to be impacted. @FAO is on the ground, assessing the damages and assisting affected farmers like Sayed.

⚠️Drought in Afghanistan is devastating crops & rural livelihoods. In hard-hit Samangan, farmers like Rahmatullah face huge losses. @FAO is delivering lifesaving support but more resources are urgently needed to scale up response, secure future harvests & prevent deeper crisis.

On 28 June flash floods swept through Daimirdad, Nirkh & Chak in Wardak, hitting about 2000 households. @FAO & partners moved fast to safely dispose of near 100 animal carcasses within the first 3 days, preventing disease spread amid a heat wave. More on FAO's support to follow!

🚨 @FAO data show severe drought across northern, northwestern & northeastern regions, now spreading nationwide. Rainfed crops have collapsed & livestock losses are rising. Affected communities urgently need cash & livestock protection. FAO is ready to scale up its response.

⚠️ Forecasts reaffirm likelihood of heatwave between 29 June – 5 July Recommendations: 🔴 Stay hydrated 🔴 Check on the elderly, the sick, pregnant women & children 🔴 Limit outdoor activity (farming, construction etc) 🔴 Keep animals in shaded shelters & ensure access to water
📢#EarlyWarning Heatwave alert (1–3 July) Extreme heat expected across Afghanistan with max temp. anomalies between 2–10°C above average in most regions. 🔴Areas in South, East & North may exceed 45°C 🔴Risk to human, livestock & vegetation health ©️Source #GlobalForecastSystem

🚨 Flash floods in eastern provinces are hitting communities & agriculture hard. New risk of floods also likely in parts of the southeastern region this week. @FAO & UN partners are assessing the impact and stands ready to support affected communities. 📸Damaged fields, Wardak

Since 2024, @FAO, partners and communities have teamed up to establish over 2 000 simple, climate-smart micro greenhouses across Afghanistan. Families are now able to grow fresh, nutritious vegetables at home, while improving their household diets and making money from surplus.

In Laghman's Qarghayi & Kunar's Sarkani districts, @FAO built 8 fishponds to improve food supply and income opportunities for communities thanks to support from @SaudiFund_Dev, @isdb_group & @OIC_OCI via #AHTF. Each pond can yield up to 1.5MT of fish per year—worth nearly $7K.
