Hot off the press! Our new Nature Reviews Endocrinology paper, led by the brilliant Filippa Juul, takes a holistic look at UPF and obesity—combining historical, epidemiological, mechanistic & policy perspectives, plus a deep dive into biological mechanisms rdcu.be/ev8Fz
Over 16-19 years of follow-up, sustained high UPF intake was associated with increased risks of non-fatal CVD and CHD but not with CVD-specific, CHD-specific, or all-cause mortality. Special thanks to amazing co-authors @SamuelDickenUK @BrownAdey @TasnimeAkbaraly & Jiahao Liu
Delighted to share my latest PhD publication. Using repeated dietary data from the UK Whitehall II cohort, we developed 10-year trajectories of UPF intake. Special thanks to supervisors @AnnieBritton3 @ClareHLlewellyn & Michail Katsoulis doi.org/10.1186/s12937…
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to apply trajectory modeling to investigate repeated measures of UPF intake among midlife to older adults in the UK.
Innovative UK adult cohort trajectory study found that a sustained high intake of UPF over a decade was associated with an increased risk of CVD and CHD over a 16-year follow-up period. Authors recommend UPF regulation and review of dietary guidelines. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40350408/

A welcome AJCN editorial calls for more efforts to quantify and understand the most important risk factors for the rapidly increasing incidence of chronic conditions at younger ages, including exposure to UPFs and the compounds added to them. ajcn.nutrition.org/article/S0002-…
Are ultra-processed foods harming our health? 🍔🍟 @imperialcollege experts and global leaders gathered to tackle this critical issue, including @Eszti_Vamos, who highlighted the urgent need to improve school #nutrition. #UPFs @ImperialSPH imperial.ac.uk/news/258854/im…
It was a great honor to attend the 17th EPH conference #EPH2024 in Lisbon! @EPHconference I had a great opportunity to present my PhD work on #UPF and risk of CHDMany thanks for my supervisors support @AnnieBritton3 @ClareHLlewellyn &michalis Kastoulis.

Based on ‘… a large and growing body of evidence (premature mortality, cancer, CVD, obesity, diabetes, impaired mental, resp. and gastr. health)’, avoiding or moderating UPF consumption is now embodied in the FAO/WHO core principles of healthy diets👏👏 openknowledge.fao.org/items/44d5714a…

📢 The Government urgently needs a plan to fix our broken food system 🛠️🍽️ and end the public health emergency 🚨 of unhealthy diets and obesity. This is the key conclusion of our new report, out today. 📝 Read it here: committees.parliament.uk/committee/698/…
I was very delighted to present my preliminary work on #UPF using Whitehall II study @SocSocMed. Fully immersed into epidemiology and public health at this prestigious conference. Many thanks to the organizers of #SSM2024 and my supervisors and peers.

Kicked off my first day at #NSCongress24, Lots of interesting talks and insightful presentations. I am also very pleased to present my recent findings @NutritionSoc on ultra-processed food consumption and risk of Type 2 diabetes using @Whitehall2study

Many congratulations Prof LIewellyn🎉🎉🎉
Delighted to have been promoted to Professor @UCL_BSH . Sad my lovely Dad, who would’ve been so happy to see this, is no longer here to celebrate with, or my mentor Jane, to whom I owe my career. V thankful to my wonderful mentors/colleagues/who’ve supported me & to my referees
Today, the US Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee reported that there is limited evidence that ultra-processed food intake increases risk of obesity in adults and made an explicit call for more US research on this important topic.
Studies using Harvard cohorts have confirmed direct association bw ultra-processed diets and ill health. Here we suggest no association with CVD mortality in the last study may be due to overadjustment. See Rezende letter on UPF subgroup analysis problems bmj.com/content/385/bm…
Ultraprocessed foods are linked to poor health. But scientists are only beginning to understand why. nyti.ms/4a7afK4
