It was great here, but I have now jumped 🚢 to the other side. Follow me at @ettema.bsky.social Hope to see you there!
My mentor, colleague, friend and all-round clever guy Ford Doolittle has just published a book "Darwinizing Gaia". I've read pieces of it an it's very thought-provoking...go out and get it! mitpress.mit.edu/9780262549523/…

Three weeks left to apply for this exciting PhD position focusing on eukaryotic genome evolution! Come work with us at @MIB_WUR! Please RT #PhDposition #evolution @WUR 🦠🧬🧐
🚨 New preprint alert! 🚨 Our latest work on Escherichia coli and the regulation of DNA replication initiation via DnaA titration on the chromosome, led by Lorenzo Olivi. Here’s a thread summarizing our findings. 🧵👇 @WUR @Ettema_lab @HohlbeinLab et al. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Great work by Lorenzo Olivi, @koestlste and other colleagues from @MIB_WUR, reporting experimental and computational evidence for titration-based replication control in E. coli!

Many novel Asgard genomes, cultivated Lokiarchaeia, new phylogenetic analyses: what insights do these and other recent studies provide into the enigmatic origin of eukaryotes? In this review in @Nature , we discuss the latest findings and open questions: nature.com/articles/s4158…
A new substrate for #nitrification by #comammox microbes: #Guanidine So glad to see this out in @Nature today – great collaborative effort from our @FWF Cluster of Excellence, @univienna, team @aalborg_uni, and @UFZ_de nature.com/articles/s4158…
🚨 New Research Alert! 🚨 Our latest manuscript tackles the longstanding debate about fatty acid synthesis in Archaea and identifies a fatty acid synthesis complex. 🧬🦠 📜 doi.org/10.1101/2024.0… #Research #Archaea #FattyAcidMetabolism #BioRxiv #Science #Microbiology
Glad to have been part of this tremendous effort by @koestlste @JvHooff @Ettema_lab & others! Read Stephan's thread to find out how he used protein structural predictions to discover 'isomorphic' eukaryotic signature proteins beyond what sequence similarity searches can find! 👇
🚀 Identifying new eukaryotic signature proteins in Asgard archaea has been a fun, exciting, at times overwhelming (so many protein structures) but fulfilling ride so far with @Ettema_lab at @MIB_WUR

Our latest: Using de novo protein structure prediction and sensitive sequence searches we found many new eukaryotic signature proteins in Asgard archaea, suggesting the archaeal ancestor of eukaryotes was more complex than previously assumed. @koestlste biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Our Viperin evolution paper is now on @NatureEcoEvo - This inspirational collaboration with the fabulous @HelenaShomar & @MDMlab_Paris explored how a structurally conserved immune gene diversify in function across the archaea-eukaryote tree of life. nature.com/articles/s4155…
