How's your lawn doing? Crunchy like mine? After a very wet month of June, Rochester hasn't even received one full inch of water this July. While we'll have a few downpours around Saturday night, the longer range forecast continues to lean drier-than-average into early August.

Did you catch tonight's sunset? Toward the top center of the Sun are several dark-cored sunspots. The biggest one is so large it could swallow Earth entirely. While large, these sunspots are relatively stable and pose little risk for solar flares in the short-term. Instead,…

STUNNING SIGHT! A 10-second exposure reveals a kaleidoscope of color as the northern lights dance over Lake Ontario. Captured around 11:50pm tonight from West Webster, New York.

Can confirm, northern lights are faintly visible to the naked eye from Lake Ontario right now.
Conditions still look decent for aurora potential tonight. I'll be home around 11:45pm & will get eyes on it. Will update!
All right, Mother Nature. Now you're just showing off. Tonight's sunset was absolutely spectacular, captured over Lake Ontario with a backdrop of clouds made up of ice crystals.

TRAFFIC ALERT: 590 southbound near Browncroft is at a standstill for what appears to be a significant accident. Best to avoid if possible.

Like brushstrokes on canvas, tonight's sky looked like artwork. Captured from Webster, New York.

I have to admit, I'm quite proud of this shot. New York's Green Lakes State Park is home to microbes that use sunlight and minerals to build a calcium shell. That calcium scatters sunlight to reveal green wavelengths, which turns the water turquoise through the summer. Upon…

Last night's incredible sunset from Lake Ontario near Rochester, New York.

Cool! Look closely at the sky over Lake Ontario tonight. Can you see the ripples? These are gravity waves. Like plucking a guitar string , a subtle disturbance aloft can kickstart a cascade of reverberation that results in a wavelike effect to clouds.

On a sparkling Friday, tonight's sunset outdid itself. Captured over Lake Ontario from Webster, New York.

Rochester meteorologists walking down the street today...
After spending much of the months of May & June running well below average, Lake Ontario is in the midst of an impressive turnaround. Average water temps today are now near peak warmth based on 30-year data (1995-2025). Lake Erie is doing the same. Climatologically, Lake Ontario…

A rare lake effect sky in mid-July, courtesy of a cold front. Captured over Lake Ontario this evening from Webster, New York.

New Severe Thunderstorm Warning for eastern Wayne county. Heads up, Wolcott. Wind and hail possible with this cell.
With storms on the horizon, it was a minor miracle seeing the sunset in any capacity this evening. When it did make a cameo, it was worth the wait.

Rochester's dew point is now up to 74° and I refuse to go outside.
This is one way to beat the heat. Thunderstorms are erupting into our afternoon instability. Heavy rain and gusty winds will accompany this action as it pushes northeast.
