The penultimate session was a highly interactive session on minimum wages & employment by @econanand

On the last day, Shravan from @working_india explained the complicated sampling method of PLFS, went through the PLFS dashboard & did a hands-on session on using PLFS data. @avani_chokshi of @AilajHq then explained the pernicious implications of the 4 Labour Codes

Abhishek Waghmare from @dataforin demonstrated their new and wonderful dashboard. Please do check it out! This was followed by an enthralling public lecture titled ‘Data & Democracy: Using numbers to speak truth to power’ by @Rukmini

After a group activity, there were engaging sessions on labour & employment in transitioning economies including songs by the passionate Prashanth & the thoughtful @Srishting

The energetic Dawa Sherpa then took over with the macroeconomics of inequality, inflation, interest rate & unemployment.

Then starting with the cult song 'haal chaal theek thaak hai' @amitbasole walked us through the trajectory on the growth story from 1950s to 2020s assessing the relationship between GDP & employment.

This was followed by a hands-on session on data concepts along with introduction to representative surveys. Subsequently, @rosaabraham6 patiently & creatively engaged us with the complexities of labour force, ways to measure employment & employment status across identities.

Theme this year: Labour & Employment. After Arjun Jayadev introduced the rationale for this workshop, we had a session on economics as if the constitution matters. Then @jayp_econ & @brohseph_ did an imp & difficult session on statistical measures & data visualisation.

There were 27 participants with rich experience, piercing questions & critical insights challenging many economics assumptions. They included labour organisers, activists for Adivasi rights, land, caste, environment, social policies, welfare & journalists reporting on these.

Thread: We wrapped up the hugely gratifying Demystifying Economics Workshop held in @azimpremjiuniv . This was the 3rd edition and was co-organised with @BahujanEcon & School for Democracy. The hope with this annual workshop is to build bridges between academia & practitioners.

After an excellent iteration in 2024, we are back with another one. In the last cohort, there were BA & MA students, PhD students & econ teachers--from India and abroad. The discussions during & after the classes were lively. Looking forward to teaching another set of students!

We are hiring RAs at the Centre for Sustainable Employment @working_india @azimpremjiuniv. RAs work closely with professors and post-docs on State of Working India and related projects. Past RAs have also been co-authors on published papers. Please apply and spread the word.

RAs have an opportunity to work on some exciting projects. Many of our RAs have also co-authored with post-doctoral fellows and faculty on various articles and research papers.
